Check land grab in temples: Pandits
Our Correspondent

Jammu, March 20
The All-India Kashmiri Samaj, has expressed dismay over the inordinate delay on part of the state government in preventing land grab in various religious shrines and temples of the minority community, in the valley.

The vice-president of the samaj, Mr A.K. Diwani, told mediapersons here today that temple land in various areas of the Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, had been allegedly grabbed by antisocial elements during the past 15 years.

He said even some government agencies had encroached upon the premises of such shrines and repeated pleas to the state government in this regard had failed.

Mr Diwani criticised the PDP-Congress coalition government for “sleeping over the religious endowment Bill, which, after being adopted by the state legislature, could bring the control of all our religious places and temples under a unified command.” He said the Bill had been referred to the President of India for his comments, four years ago. The President, Mr Diwani said, had forwarded it to the Governor, Mr S.K. Sinha, who passed on the same to the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, but so far no move has been initiated by the government for establishing a body in this connection.

Referring to the recently conducted civic elections they described it as a “fraud on democracy” because 80,000 Pandit voters were not allowed to vote as their names had been deleted from the electoral roll.
