Gurdial Singh a writer of memorable fiction
It was the day of the Punjabi novelist, our very own Gurdial Singh, in city on Saturday evening as he sat in the British Library in Sector 8, signing copies of 'The Survivors', a translation of his original Punjabi novel 'Unhoye'. 'Meet the author and get a copy of the book signed' was part of the book-launch functions organised by Katha, a publishing society based in New Delhi.

Two unidentified youths snatched a mobile phone from Neeraj Kumar, a resident of Handesra village, on the Lalru-Handesra road, here today. In a complaint to the police, Neeraj Kumar stated that two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched his mobile phone while he was making a phone call.

A Santro car of senior journalist Sridhar Raman was stolen from in front of house No. 18, Sector 10, yesterday. Raman’s house is close to Hotel Mountview. The Santro XG car (CH03 P7724) is reported to have been stolen between 2 am and 5 am.

Spice Telecom plans to provide connectivity to nearly 125 small towns across the state this year. DGM (Marketing), Mukul Khanna said sites have been erected in Sectors 22, 20, 24 and 49 and some more would be put up in the next two months for better network capacity.

English Dept to hold conference

Nearly 100 delegates from India and abroad will take part in a two-day conference on “Landmarks on the American scene: Then and now”. The Department of English, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in collaboration with MELUS-India, Indian chapter of the US-based Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the USA will be holding this conference in Chandigarh on March 28.

Students end protest
Chandigarh, March 20
The protest by students Shri Dhanwantry Ayurvedic College, Sector 46, organised under the aegis of the ABVP ended today. The university authorities have accepted their demands and said that practical examination of Sahilya tantra (surgery) which was scheduled for March 23 now will be held in the first week of April. The result of the final year will be declared within a week.

Upcoming Vietnamese tennis players train in Chandigarh

Two young tennis players from Vietnam Nam Lam and Son Nguyen, both aged 13, had a week long stint here in Chandigarh. Both are part of the five member South East Asia Zone II Tennis team 14 and under who will take part in the ITF sponsored South Asia Inter Zone Tennis meet-cum-camp to be held at Delhi from March 26 to April 10.

Convincing win for AG Punjab

Chandigarh, March 20
Host AG Punjab had a convincing 3-0 victory over AG Madhya Pradesh to move into the semifinal of the All India Audit and Accounts Inter Zonal Hockey Tournament being played at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here today. AG Punjab played attacking game from the very outset but failed to convert the first penalty corner they got in the third minute of the game.

Babarpur win Volleyball title
Patiala, March 20
Babarpur annexed the title in the first Jasbir memorial volleyball tournament which concluded at the local Polo grounds here today. In the final played this evening in front of a packed crowd, the Babarpur team, aided by some good spiking by Satgur Singh and Amarjeet Singh, downed Fatehpur 27-24, 25-21.
