City’s oldest building likely to be demolished
Chandigarh, January 22 Interestingly the office of the Engineer–in–Chief, PWD, Haryana, is presently based here. An annexe of the same building houses the office of the Haryana Tax Tribunal and also the office of the Executive Engineer of the Chandigarh Administration. It is Haryana officials which have reminded the administration of the building’s potential to be a heritage building. The Haryana office of the PWD will be shifting out once its new building in Sector 33 is ready, however, there is the need to save the old building from demolition, say Haryana officials. The building once housed the office of first Chief Engineer of Chandigarh P.L.Verma. The office of the Chief Engineer, which is now located in the UT Secretariat in Sector 9, came up later in the 1980s. In the past two weeks the alignment of the road in Sector 19-B has been changed partially to accommodate a house which was recently auctioned. Mr Dinesh Goswami, who has been living in the sector for the past 35 years, said: “The road has been curved in such a manner that it has become a death trap. There was no need to re-align the road. It was the finest intra-sector roads in the city.” Even the alignment, which was carried out earlier, is not final. It will have to be changed again. Another resident said the houses should have been constructed around the building and the road could have stayed the way it was earlier. The newly made alignment is such that it abuts the verandah of one of the annexe buildings, making it dangerous for passers-by. |
