CHETNA RALLY: The Amritsar Consumers Welfare Forum will organise a chetna rally here on Friday. The aim of the rally is to make people aware of their rights and responsibilities under the Consumer Protection Act.

MSS MARRIAGES: The Nirmal Seva Society will solemnise marriages of 21 poor girls on December 25. The society organises mass marriages annually.

DORAHA
CONGRATULATED: The management, Principal and staff of Saraswati Model High School, Doraha lauded the teacher of the school, Mrs Kiran Sharma for winning the President of India's census medal and certificate of honour for her continuation as enumerator for census of India 2001. She was given the award by Governor Mr S.R. Rodrigues at Chandigarh on December 10.

Hoshiarpur
ARRESTED: The police has arrested Resham Singh of Rampur and seized 5 kg of poppy husk from his possession. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered.

INJURED: Three Army men, including a Major, were injured in an accident when a bus hit their jeep near the Beas bridge on Monday. They were going to Pathankot. A case has been registered.

CREMATED: The Dasuya administration has cremated the body of an unidentified lady passenger, who was killed in the Mansar train accident.

SEMINAR: A national seminar on India’s economic reforms and development during the past 15 years was held at Maharaja Agarsen College here on Tuesday. Prof S.K. Arora, former chairman of the Department of Commerce, Punjabi University, was the chief guest. More than 200 delegates participated in the seminar.

Medal for E.O.
: Mr Paramjit Singh Ghuman, Executive Officer, Municipal Council Jagraon has been awarded census silver medal by the President of India and a Certificate of Honour was presented to him at a state level function at Chandigarh. Mr Ghuman was appointed to this post against class I.

Nawanshahr
DEMANDED: The district unit of the Bhatta Workers Union, Punjab, organised a dharna and rally in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday in support of its demand. Mr Kulwinder Singh Waraich, state vice-president, criticised the state government for forcing its decision of mixing fly ash in the preparation of bricks. Besides being costly, it could pose serious health problems for the labourers. He demanded that the decision should be withdrawn immediately.

ESSAY COMPETITION: The District Education Department has organised an essay writing competition in English and Punjabi under the aegis of the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh. As many as 100 students took part in the competition. Jaskaranpreet Kaur (Guru Nanak Mission Public Senior Secondary School, Dhahan Kaleran), Shaveta Bhucher (Government Senior Secondary School, Nawanshahr), and Harjinder Kaur (Guru Nanak mission Public Senior Secondary School, Nawanshahr) in the English Section and Mandeep Kaur (Government Senior Secondary School, Nawanshahr), Harpreet Kaur (Government Senior Secondary School, Aur) and Neha Gautam (Government Senior Secondary School, Nawanshahr) bagged the first three positions, respectively.

GANG BUSTED: The local police has busted a gang of burglars by arresting three persons-Shingara Singh, alias, Martial alias doctor, son of Jagan Nath, Jagtar Singh, alias, Laddi, son of Tarsem Singh, both residents of Alipur village in Hoshiarpur district, and Dilawer Singh, alias, Saba, son of Pritam Singh, a resident of Alachaur village. A country made pistol, three live cartridges, a scooter, five mobile phones and Rs 2,000 were recovered from their possession, Mr Navjot Singh Mahil, DSP said here on Tuesday.

ANNUAL FUNCTION: Maharaj Lal Das Brahmanand Bhuriwale Garib Dassi Girls College, Tapparian Khurd, has organised its annual prize distribution function. Mr Rana K.P. Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, Industries and Transport, was the chief guest. Mr Harjit Inder Singh Grewal, Deputy Commissioner, presided over the function. Mr K.P. Singh announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 21,000 sanctioned by Mr Grewal for the college building.

MEETING: The Malta Boat Tragedy Probe Mission will hold a condolence meeting on the eighth anniversary of Malta boat tragedy, at Company Bagh, Jalandhar, on December 25, Mr Balwant Singh Khera, chairman of the mission, said here on Tuesday.

SEMINAR: The local unit of the Indian Medical Association organised a seminar under the guidance of Dr Kahsmir Singh Sohan, Senior Medical Officer, of the local Civil Hospital, here on Tuesday. Dr H.P. Singh, a paediatric surgeon, emphasised on the need of an early detection of congenital anomalies in new-born babies.

Bilaspur
FOUNDATION: Himachal Pradesh Forest, Youth Services and Sports Minister Ram Lal Thakur has laid the foundation stone of Silk Technical Training Centre at Pohani village near Namhole, about 25 km from here. He said under the Centre’s Gold Mine Project Rs 8.45 crore were being spent for the development of Mushroom plantation, silk production and floriculture in the Bilaspur district. It would benefit more than five hundred families who have been living below poverty line.

CAMP: The Satya Sai Samiti of the district in collaboration with its local unit of samiti has organised a free eyes treatment and operation camp at Jhandutta. Dr K.L. Gupta, district president of the samiti, said 66 eyes lens were given by Dr C.L.Chauhan. He treated more than 300 patients.

NEW SP: Mr Daljit Thakur has taken over as the new district police chief of Hamirpur. He took over from Mr Shyam Bhagat Negi who has gone to Dharamsala on promotion as Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

Solan
CASE REGISTRED: On a complaint of Ms Neesha Lal a case has been registered against her husband, Mr Sanjay Lal and her mother-in-law. In her complaint, she has alleged that the both were harassing her for dowry. She was married to Mr Sanjay Lal in 1991. She has two daughters. Mr Sanjay Lal has been arrested in this connection.
