Road divider demolished to benefit petrol station
Ludhiana, November 28
A part of the divider on the road between Sherpur locality and Focal Point, Dhandari, has been demolished by the staff of the B and R wing of the Municipal Corporation, allegedly to benefit a petrol station, owned by a senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, a couple of days back.

Poverty forces 23-year-old to commit suicide
Ludhiana, November 28
A 23-year-old poverty stricken youth committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at his house in Balmiki Colony, Jawaddi Khurd early today morning.
The youth, Hari Singh, was a daily wager but was without work for the past over two weeks. His parents were also working as labourers and being the eldest of the six children Hari was the main bread earner of the family.

Large industries face frequent strikes
Ludhiana, November 28
Frequent strikes by employee unions in different industries here are threatening industrial growth in the city. The export-oriented units, which face stiff competition in the international market, are the worst victims.

Martyr’s statue unveiled
Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 28
The family of shaheed Avtar Singh Active Lance Dafedar, of the Deccan Horse Regiment got his statue unveiled at a brief function organised by the villagers and the contemporaries of the shaheed at Latala village today. Avtar Singh had sacrificed his life at Khemkaran during the Indo-Pak war 1965. The unveiling ceremony was presided over by Major T.J. K Ohri from the Pathankot unit of the Deccan Horse Regiment.  A group of soldiers fired shots in the air as a mark of respect to the martyr on behalf of the unit that he had served in.

Council to register all nursing homes
Ludhiana, November 28
The Punjab Medical Council has decided to register all nursing homes and private clinics in the state to strictly enforce medical ethics. Disclosing this here today, the Chairman Disciplinary Action Committee of the PMC, Dr Gursharan Singh, said the council had embarked upon a vigorous campaign to end quackery in the state.

BJP district unit meeting held
Amloh, November 28
A meeting of the district Fatehgarh Sahib unit of the BJP was held in Ram Bhawan here yesterday. It was presided over by its district chief Dharampal. Mr Raj Pal Garg, vice-president of the party, said the meeting had been called to make arrangements and to assign duties to party workers to ensure maximum participation in Delhi rally.

A seminar on “need for social awareness” was organised by the Community Policing Resource Centre, Jagraon, and the Police-Public Welfare and Awareness Society at Government Senior Secondary School, Pakhowal, on Saturday. It was chaired by Mr Rajiv Ahir, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jagraon.

“Eh Na Bhali Riti”, a book of short stories written by Ms Paramjit Kaur Nijjar, was released today by Dr Surjit Patar, president, Punjabi Sahit Akademi, at a function held in Ludhiana.
