Low turnout for MC bypoll

Barring a few incidents of ferrying of voters by rival candidates, the byelection to Ward No. 11 of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) passed off peacefully with about 37pc voters casting their votes.

Fog brings the first feel of winter

Winter literally came unannounced this evening as the atmosphere wore a misty blanket. After a fairly dry day, the sudden change in weather phenomenon towards dusk surprised one and all.

13-yr-old schoolgirl commits suicide
Mohali, November 28
A 13-year-old schoolgirl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan at her house in Sohana village yesterday. According to the police, the victim, Sudarshan, was depressed and was suffering from a neurotic disorder for many years.

Devotee crushed to death under chariot
Panchkula, November 28
A 35-year-old woman was crushed to death under the chariot of Lord Jagannath during a rath yatra passing through the town today. The incident took place around 8.30 pm when the yatra was passing the road dividing Sectors 10 and 11.

Sukhna silt drowns all solutions

PUDA for separate rly ticket counter
Mohali, November 28
The Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) would make a fresh move to provide the township with a railway ticket reservation counter. Having agreed in principle to give space free of cost to the Railways, PUDA authorities have now decided to select a suitable site in the middle of the township for the same.

The Lions Club, International organised a free ear and hearing checkup camp at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, here today. The ENT specialist, Dr C. Digital cameras, computer stolen
Chandigarh, November 28
Mr Sandeep Pundeer reported to the police that one computer, two digital cameras, one monitor, one keyboard and some other articles were stolen from his shop in Sector 32 during the intervening night of November 26-27. The police said the thieves entered the shop by breaking open the locks.

Groom attacked at pre-marriage party

Pre-marriage celebrations turned violent in Ram Darbar last night when four or five boys of the locality allegedly attacked the groom one day ahead of his marriage.

9 kg poppy husk seized

The police today arrested Kuldeep Singh during a special naka by the Pinjore police, and seized 9 kg of poppy husk and 48 bottles of liquor.

The car of Anu Chathrath, a councillor of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, hit a scooterist near the lights point of Sectors 15 and 16 on Friday. The scooterist, Mr Arun Kumar (31), of Khudda Lahora village was seriously injured in the accident and was hospitalised.

Students who had appeared for PhD entrance test in Hindi at Panjab University here today claimed that the prescribed pattern for the test was not followed. They said against 10 questions of which four were to be attempted, the question paper had a total of four questions only.

Caustic foods cause foodpipe cancer

ancer of the foodpipe (oesophagus) has emerged as the fourth leading cancer in northern India. According to the PGI’s database, 900 patients of the disease visit the institute’s OPD every year.
