Saraswati Model School annual function held

Doraha, November 28
The annual function and prize distribution of Saraswati Model Senior Secondary School was held here today.
It was presided over by Mr Surinder Pal Sood, acting president, Doraha Municipal Council, and the chief guest was Ms Veena Dada, OSD to the Chairman, Punjab School Education Board.

Mr D.S. Gosain, Principal, welcomed the guests, parents and students and read the annual report.

In her inaugural speech, Ms Dada appreciated the efforts of the management, Principal and the staff of the school for running the school in a rural area. She also congratulated the prize winners and the participants who ensured their active participation by putting forth a colourful variety show.

The function began with Saraswati Vandana, followed by shabads and the lighting of a lamp by Mr Sood.

College, Doraha, Mr Sukhpal Singh, Director, Institute of Management and Technology, Doraha, Prof Kuldip Singh, Prof M.S. Bhandari, Prof Williamjit Singh, Mr Bant Singh Daburjee, Mr Madan Mohan Sharma, Mr Manoj Bansal and Mr Bobby Tiwari, president, Rama Natak Club, were present, among others.

GPS function: It was a special day for the students of GPS on Saturday.
Dressed in colourful attires, the students presented cultural items at the Kanahaya Lal Bardeja hall to mark the annual day celebrations of the junior wing. The president of the Gobindgarh Educational and Social Welfare Trust, Mr Suresh Goyal, was the chief guest. Mr Chaman Lal Garg, chairman, school managing committee, Mr Swaranjit Singh Bagli, Mr Om Prakash Goyal, Mr Sat Dev Saggar, Mr R.P. Bhatia, Mr Satya Prakash, Mr Pawan Sharda, Mr N.K. Khanna, Mr Jai Gopal, Mr Piara Singh Kalsi and Mr Sanjay Bhatia were the guests of honour.

The programme began with Saraswati Vandana, which followed by the welcome address by the Principal, Mr Bahadur Singh.

The chief guest gave away prizes. He praised the efforts of the students and the teachers for putting up such a scintillating show. The stage was compered by Riti, Mohak, Rajat and Harleen.

College to hold national seminar

Ludhiana, November 28
Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, Ludhiana, will hold a national seminar on “Regionalism — a threat to Indian state (in context of North-Western states)” on November 29 and 30.

The seminar is sponsored by the ICSSR. The seminar will begin with a welcome note by Dr Charanjit Mahal, Principal, Guru Nanak Girls College, and will be inaugurated by Mr Gurbir Singh, president, Guru Nanak Education Trust.

Dr Jagroop Singh Sekhon, Head, Department of Political Sciences, Amritsar, Dr Ronki Ram of Panjab University, Chandigarh, Mr Dinesh Arora of DAV College, Jalandhar, and Dr P.S. Sohi of S.C.D. Government College, Ludhiana, are expected to participate.

College teachers to hold protest

Doraha, November 28
On a call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union, lecturers of private-aided colleges of Ludhiana district will hold a protest march in front of the Chattar Singh Park on November 30 at 11 am.

Prof V.K. Bhardwaj, Prof Rohit Kumar and Prof Parminder Singh, all office-bearers, Prof Kuldip Singh from Doraha, Prof Kuldip Batta from Narangwal and Prof Baldeep Singh from Samrala-Bondli College, all executive members, said the rally would be organised in protest against the dilly-dallying attitude of the Punjab Government towards their demands. Their demands included the restoration of 95 per cent grants to aided colleges, 50 per cent merger of DA and HRA for rural colleges and the implementation of the recommendations of the Johal Committee report.

Lions Club organises medical camp

Ludhiana, November 28
To mark the 19th death anniversary of freedom fighter and social worker Gian Singh Dhingra, a free medical check up camp was organised by Lions Club, Ludhiana Royal, at Dr Kotnis Acupuncture Hospital, Salem Tabri, Ludhiana on Sunday.

Mr Gian Singh Dhingra was the founder of this hospital. Dr Ashok Gupta, eye surgeon, Dr Pawan, dental surgeon, Dr Sunil Lakhotra, child specialist, Dr Charanjit Uppal, Dr Inderjit Singh and Dr K.S. Bhalla, acupuncturist checked patients at the camp. Medicines were distributed free of cost to the patients at the camp.

Patiala, city skaters win laurels in state championship

Ludhiana, November 28
The skaters from Patiala and Ludhiana maintained their supremacy in the sport by clinching six and five gold medals, respectively, in the 16th Punjab State Roller Skating Championship that concluded at the Leisure Valley Rink, Sarabha Nagar, here today.

While hosts Ludhiana proved their supremacy in the road races, Patiala skaters dominated in the roller hockey event. Other skaters who made their presence felt, were those from Amritsar and Sangrur.

Mr Harnam Das Johar, Education Minister, Punjab, was the chief guest at the prize distribution function.

Results: Road race 750m Boys (0-6) — Shubham (Amritsar) first; Robin (Amritsar) second; and Sifatjot Singh (Patiala), third.

Girls (0-6) — Ibadat (Sangrur), first; Anmoldeep Kaur (Patiala), second; and Aditya (Amritsar), third. Girls (6-8) — Anmoldeep Kaur (Amrtisar) first; Simran Mann (Sangrur) second: and Chanchalpreet (Sangrur) third.

1000m boys (8-10) — Kanwardeep (Ludhiana) first; Harshdeep (Sangrur), second; and Avdeep (Amritsar) third.

Girls (8-10) — Rinshikha Thukhral (Ludhiana), first; Aishwarya (Ludhiana), second; and Navpreet (Sangrur), third. Boys 1500m (10-12) — Mandeep Singh (Ludhiana), first; Avneet (Amritsar), second; and Charanpreet (Patiala) third. Amritsar, Jalandhar athletes dominate

Athletes from Amritsar and Jalandhar dominated the proceedings on the third day of the five-day Golden Jubilee Punjab Schools Inter-District Athletics Meet being held at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Both the districts shared three gold medals each.

Results: (Girls) u-17 years- 3 km walk — Amandeep Kaur of Amritsar 1, Rajveer Kaur of Amritsar 2 and Manjit Kaur of Sangrur 3; 5000m (u-19 years) — Rajvinder Kaur of Amritsar 1, Savita of Gurdaspur 2 and Beant Kaur of Ludhiana 3; 1500m (u-17 years) — Ramandeep Kaur of Sangrur 1, Navjovan Kaur of Hoshairpur 2 and Baljeet Kaur of Sangur 3.

Harry adjudged Mr Libra

Harsimran Singh Harry was adjudged Mr Libra in the Bodybuilding Championship organised by the Libra Health Club at its centre here today. More than 150 participants took part in the championship in which competition in four categories was held.

In the fly-weight category, Sunny Uppal was declared the winner, followed by Harvinder Pal and Nitin Batta. In the bantam-weight section, the top honour was secured by Rajwinder Singh. The second and third spots were bagged by Bharti Kumar and Parveen Kumar, respectively.

Harsimran Singh Harry, in a tough competition, was named the winner, while Kuldeep Singh got the second position. In the heavy-weight category, Gurbir Singh proved his supremacy over others. Amarpal had to content with the second position.

Deepak Prashar, national champion and member of the Indian Bodybuilding Association, and Ravi Prashar, an international bodybuilding judge, gave away prizes.

Dakha college PU Division ‘B’ champion

Ludhiana, November 28
GTB National College, Dakha, have scored an eight-wicket win over Guru Nanak College, Killianwali, to emerge as the champion in the B Division Cricket Tournament of Panjab University, Chandigarh.

With this victory, GTB College made sorts of records by winning B Division for eight times during the past 10 years.

In the final (40 overs), Guru Nanak College, put into bat first, were bowled out for 61 runs in 23.4 overs. Only two batsmen, Resham Singh and Jagraj, could reach double figure. They made 23 and 10 runs, respectively. GTB National College made the required runs in 13 overs with the loss of two wickets.
