In his inaugural speech, Dr K.S. Aulakh, said this was the first time in the history of the university that students from the Faislabad university and their teachers were participating in the festival. We should develop and continue these relationships in the future, he added.

The University of Agriculture, Faislabad, was started in 1906 and many students and teachers from this university migrated to India after Partition.

Referring to Shah Mohammad, Bulleh Shah and Waris Shah, Dr Aulakh Punjabi has a rich heritage. It is the nature of Punjabis to forge lasting relationships with others from the core of their heart.

Pratibha impresses with Bharatnatyam performance
Asha Ahuja

Pratibha Prahlad Ludhiana, November 18
Pratibha Prahlad, a rare combination of talent and beauty, gave a brilliant Bharatnatyam performance at DAV Public School this morning. SPIC MACAY, a society for promotion of culture and art among youth, had sponsored her dance programme.

Since Pratibha has been associated with SPIC MACAY, she knows the pulse of students and set the students at ease by telling them that Bharatnatyam was devised by gods to provide diversion for them as a means of recreation and Lord Shiva had decided to perform it with his consort , Parvati.

She said Bharatnatyam was one of the most ancient of all dances. Human being craves for union with the Divine and Indian dancers also strive to reach the higher plane to be one with God. Bharatnatyam is spiritual in nature as the dancers perform it with complete devotion. Carnatic music accompanies this dance.

She started the morning performance with an invocation to Shiva. Her facial expressions were so fluid that within seconds, they showed a gamut of emotions ranging from joy, devotion, humility, wonder, love admiration and happiness.

Her next piece was to depict Shiva seated on the bull. She also told the students that Carnatic music was not open ended and had to stay within its definite beat. She said while learning the dance one had to spend around two years to learn just the foot work and to be able to perform on the stage. One needs to practice for at least 10 to 15 years, to be able to perform with confidence.

She introduced her student Shubha Patwardhan, who had left her job as an HRD Manager in Coca Cola company to pursue her passion for dance. She, too presented a piece of a Kannada poet, depicting, Krishna’s frustration at not getting attention from a girl.

Then much to the delight of the students Pratibha brought out the pathos and yearning of Meera who asks all her friends to send her message to Krishna to come back to her soon.

She answered the students’ questions patiently. In reply to a question on the fading popularity of classical dances in comparison to Western dances, she said firmly, “It is a misnomer. All media created. I have always given performances in jam packed halls. Bharatnatyam has been there and it will continue to be there .”

Later on while talking to mediapersons, she said she would give her firstever performance of Bharatnatyam in Pakistan at the World Performing Art Festival to be held in Lahore on November 28. She will perform on Nusrat Fateh Ali’s song ‘Tum laut ke aa jaate’.

Though she is the president of the Lok Shakti Party, she feels in India unlike in the USA, the artists cannot be very vocal about their personal choices during electoral process as they depend on government patronage.
