Pak hope to maintain winning spree
Lahore, November 9 The 15-member Pakistan squad will fly to India in the afternoon tomorrow for a one-off match in Kolkata at the weekend to mark the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Indian Cricket Board. "We have won all three previous matches against India and (coach Bob) Woolmer has made a difference in our overall showing," Inzamam old AFP. He also praised the players for executing the coach's plans. Pakistan's last tour to India was in 1999 before political tensions halted fixtures between the two nations. Earlier this year India visited Pakistan for the first tour since 1989, winning a one-day series 3-2 and the Tests 2-1. But since Englishman Woolmer took over in June, Pakistan have beaten India by 59 runs in an Asia Cup match in Sri Lanka in July. This was followed by a 66-run win at Amstelveen in Holland in August and a three-wicket victory in the ICC Trophy in England in September. "Since losing to India on home grounds we have shown improvement but we still haven't achieved the desired results," said Inzamam, one of only four players in the line-up to have toured India in 1999. "Wins in the last three matches have raised our confidence but a one-day match between India and Pakistan is always a new challenge for both the teams," Inzamam said. Inzamam said he has fully recovered from a back pain which forced him to sit out the last two days during his team's six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second Test in Karachi last week. Also back to full fitness are fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami, who both missed the Karachi Test. "When you play before a crowd of over 100,000 at Eden Gardens it's real tough for the touring team," the Pakistani skipper said. "But we will do our best to give an Eid gift to the nation by winning the match," he said, referring to the annual Muslim Eid festival which falls either on Sunday or Monday. Pakistan have only one uncapped player in 32-year-old Aamir Basheer. He scored five hundreds at domestic level last season and four in the current season. Woolmer will join the team in Calcutta after spending a week with his family in England. Squad: Inzamam-ul Haq (captain), Yousuf Youhana (vice captain), Taufiq Umer, Imran Farhat, Salman Butt, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Aamir Basheer, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Riaz Afridi, Rana Naveedul Hassan.

KARACHI: Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik will consult a bio-mechanics expert in Australia in a bid to remove any flaws in his bowling action.
Umpires Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar, along with match referee Jeff Crowe, reported Malik’s bowling action to the ICC after last month’s final of the triangular one-day tournament between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Lahore.

Dharmani helps Punjab gain first innings lead
Chandigarh, November 9 Uttar Pradesh made a determined second innings reply and finished the day at a formidable 206 for two. Opener Rohit Parkash, who carried his bat through in the first innings, came good again, scoring a scintillating 84-ball 62, studded with 10 fours, while Jyoti P Yadav was unbeaten on 82. Skipper Mohammed Kaif completed a forgettable outing as a batsman. Kaif, who had scored 14 runs in the first innings, failed to prosper again and was out for 12. Tomorrow being the last day of the four-day contest, the result, unless something dramatic happens, looks an ominous draw. Dharmani’s efforts in securing the first-innings lead for Punjab could prove to be decisive. When all the Punjab batsman with the exception of Yuvraj Singh came a cropper against a disciplined rival bowling attack, Dharmani batted with determination and character to deny Uttar Pradesh any advantage. Starting from his overnight score of 83, the Patiala batsman remained unflustered today. Using a right mix of caution and aggression, he took upon himself to steer his team out of choppy waters. First he added crucial 29 runs for the eighth wicket with Gagandeep Singh, who was castled by seamer RP Singh after he had contributed 17. Off the next delivery RP Singh bowled debutant VRV Singh and Punjab, 19 runs short of gaining the first innings lead, were in doldrums again. But Rajesh Sharma proved to be a revelation as a batsman at No 11. He occupied at the crease for well over an hour and ensured that Punjab not only overhauled the first innings total of Uttar Pradesh, but took a crucial 39-run lead. Punjab innings ended when Dharmani edged seamer Salabh Srivatsava to be caught behind after scoring 127. This was Dharmani’s 17th century in the Ranji Trophy. On 84, Dharmani completed 5000 runs in the national championship to become the second Punjab batsman after Vikram Rathore to achieve the distinction. Rajesh, though scored unbeaten 19, frustrated the rival bowlers for 77 minutes and hit three boundaries. Ashish Winston Zaidi and RP Singh, who took three wickets apiece, were the most successful bowlers, while S Srivatsava took two wickets. Kambli’s bowling derails Railways
New Delhi, November 9 Rolling his arm only because strike bowler Avishkar Salvi hurt himself in the second over of the day, Kambli struck with the very second ball with his seam up stuff from a short run-up to send back Shreyas Khanolkar. The India batsman then dismissed the other overnight batsman Tejinder Pal Singh in his third over to effectively break the back of hosts’ batting Resuming at 111 for three, Railways had fallen to 129 for five and they never really recovered from those two telling blows. Though the lower order showed some resilience, they were eventually bowled out for 284. Ajit Agarkar and Sairaj Bahutule chipped away at the Railways tail to give the defending champions a 77-run first innings lead. Scoreboard Mumbai (1st innings): 361 Railways (1st innings):

Two worthwhile stands, between Vidyuth Sivaramakrishnan and S.Badrinath who put on 137 runs for the second wicket and a quickfire 134 in 34 overs between centurion S Sharath and Sridharan Sriram for the fourth wicket, helped Tamil Nadu gain the upper hand. Fleming’s publisher shrugs off threat
Sydney, November 9 Hodder Moa Beckett managing director and publisher Kevin Chapman said the book ‘Balance Of Power’ had undergone the regular legal checks. “We’re quite comfortable with what’s been published,” Chapman was quoted as saying in the local media here today. “We didn’t think it was particularly problematic from a legal point of view. “In that section Stephen has not said a lot more than he’s said before. Stephen’s been incredibly consistent with what he’s said. He recorded it all at the time and took good advice,” they said. In the book written by journalist Richard Boock, Fleming had named sports promotor-turned businessman Khetrapal as the one to approach him to join the match-fixing syndicate in 1999. The New Zealand captain said he was approached in the bar of the team’s Leicester hotel during the 1999 World Cup in England by a man later identified as Khetrapal, an associate of Indian bookmaker Sanjeev Chawla. However, Khetrapal denied these allegations and told reporters yesterday that he was considering legal action against Fleming. “I am certainly considering filing a defamation suit but I cannot do so only on the basis of media reports,” Khetrapal said. “We will go through the book and what is written in it and would take appropriate decision in a couple of days,” Khetrapal said.

McMillan fined
DHAKA: New Zealand’s Craig McMillan was fined 25 per cent of his match fee while Scott Styris was reprimanded by the International Cricket Council for misconduct during a one-day international against Bangladesh last week.
Right-hand batsman McMillan showed dissent both by action and verbally to on-field umpire Mahbubur Rahman after being dismissed lbw by Aftab Ahmed. Styris, who was chosen as man-of-the-series, walked down the pitch to Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Ashraful and talked to him in an aggressive manner. — Reuters

Pak PM for Punjab
Games likely
Chandigarh, November 9 If
the enthusiasm of the organisers of the meet to be held at Patiala
between December 5 and 11 is any indication, he may accompany Pakistan
Punjab’s Chief Minister to both Patiala and Jalandhar for the event. Punjab’s
Chief Parliamentary Secretary for Sports and Youth Welfare, Rana Gurmeet
Singh Sodhi, and the State’s Finance and Planning Minister, Mr
Surinder Singla, today indicated that Mr Aziz is likely to accept the
invitation being extended to him through diplomatic channels. “We
have been able to talk to Pakistan Prime Minister’s Secretariat in
Islamabad and we are very hopeful of Mr Aziz joining Indian Prime
Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, either at opening or closing ceremony of
the Games,” says Mr Singla. In fact, Mr Singla and Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi also made a statement to this effect at the closing ceremony of the 21st All-India Surjit Memorial Hockey Tournament at Jalandhar saying that in case the visit of Pakistan Prime Minister comes through, he would witness hockey encounter between teams of two Punjabs at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium at Jalandhar. They
are hopeful of getting both Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chief
Minister of Punjab (Lahore) here for the meet. “The purpose of
organising these friendship games would be achieved only if the top
leaders of the two nations also attend some ceremonies associated with
the conduct of the Games,” they asserted. It may be mentioned here
that Chief Minister of Pakistan’s Punjab has already accepted
invitation from his counterpart, Capt Amarinder Singh, to attend the
December 5 to 11 Friendship Games, which says Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi,
would be annual feature. The second edition of the Games would be held
in Punjab, he said. In all competitions will be held in 13 disciplines during the week-long extravaganza to be held mainly in Patiala. “Only
hockey has been shifted to Jalandhar on popular demand,” said Rana
Sodhi. While Indian Punjab team would be in full strength for the encounter, team from across the border may be without stalwarts as most of Olympians and international players of Pakistan would be busy assisting their national team in the Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament at Lahore at the same time. “We
were not aware of the clash of dates between Indo-Pak Punjab Games and
Champions Trophy,” said a member of the Organising Committee hoping
that Pakistan Punjab would send its best available hockey team for the
Jalandhar match. There are not many Punjab players in the Indian team that has been given entry in the Lahore tournament after Olympic champions Australia withdrew from the contest on security grounds. |
16 jumbo panels for Punjab Games
Patiala, November 9 The committee ‘will negotiate for sale of exclusive TV rights, apart from drawing up a plan to market the games so generate maximum revenue.’ To see to it that the games roll on smoothly, 16 jumbo-sized committees have been formed and the games organising committee takes the cake with as many as 75 people on board. This committee, which has Congress President Sonia Gandhi as its Chief Patron, has all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members of Punjab in it, irrespective of their political affiliation. It certainly seems to be top heavy as it is ‘patronised’ by as many as eight persons, including Randhir Singh, Suresh Kalmadi, Shiv Raj Patil, Sunil Dutt, Natwar Singh, Ambika Soni and SS Dhindsa. Prominent sportspersons of yesteryear who have found a place on this committee are hockey Olympians Ajit Pal Singh and Pargat Singh, former international footballer and Arjuna awardee Inder Singh, apart from Milkha Singh, Dara Singh, Parveen Kumar and Balbir Singh (senior). The Chief Minister’s son also figures in the hospitality committee as its vice-chairman. This committee, headed by chief secretary Jai Singh Gill, will ‘prepare the menu for food and beverages to be served in VIP lounges during the games.’ |
Gurdaspur girls win team title
Ropar, November 9 Mandeep Kaur of Amritsar won 200-meter race in athletics. Gurvinder Kaur of Hoshiarpur won 400 meter free style swimming event. In other swimming events, Mankiran of Sangrur won gold in 100-meter breast stroke, Arpanjett of Sangrur stood second and Ranbir Kaur of Hoshiarpur was third. In badminton events, Patiala and Jalandhar entered in the final. Sangrur, Ropar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar entered in the semifinals in handball. The athletes participating in the gymnastic events in the Punjab State Games for women faced inconvenience due to the poor arrangements. In addition to it, many of coaches and judges were found drunk during these events by The Tribune team. Gymnastic events like floor exercise, uneven bar and balancing beam, were held in open ground of M.N.C School. In floor exercise events were held without music as the light went off during the preliminary round. As there were no helpers, the participants were seen shifting material required for the events from one place to other place. A senior coach from Gurdaspur who had been awarded state award twice on the condition of anonymity said in such state events, the authorities should make proper arrangements so that the players should perform as per their capacity. All the gymnastics events are ideally held indoor, but here all the events took place in open. Another coach from Patiala said due to lack of proper arrangements some of the girls were not able to performed. When contacted, the District Sports Officer, Mr Ravi Kant, said” We have tried our best to provide proper facilities to the athletes. He also said he will look into the matter and will take action against any coach or judge if found drunk during the games”. |
