Ponting to lodge formal protest
Sydney, November 7 Ponting said his displeasure would be spelled out in his official captain's post-match report, and that he was hoping to enlist the support of Dravid, who stood as captain in the Mumbai Test, to impress on the need to have more genuine Test pitches. Australia were bowled in less than a session for 93 off 30.5 overs to lose the fourth Test as 20 wickets fell on a Test day for the first time in history. Ponting, who arrived from Mumbai yesterday, said the Wankhede Stadium wicket was blatantly sub-standard and his side's second innings batting effort could be almost exclusively attributed to the dodgy deck. "It's the sort of wicket where you're always in two minds about what to do," he was quoted as saying in media reports here today. "If you try to stand there and defend you're eventually going to get out. If you try to play a shot here and there you're a good chance of getting out as well. You can't fault any of the guys. We tried our hardest and we ended up getting pretty close," he said. The Aussie skipper, who missed the first three Tests of the series due to a thumb injury, said he wanted to talk to Dravid about the issue. "I want to have a chat to Rahul about it, and both put our minds together. I don't think he'll have too many good things to say about the wicket either. We need to have a chat about it, and have a chat to the referee... "I guess the match referee will write a report about this wicket, and obviously that'll be sent to the ICC. Let's hope there is an inquiry, just because it's so disappointing," Ponting said. He also said India's cricket would be better served with more atypical wickets, such as the seamer prepared in Nagpur, where Australia won the third Test by 342 runs.

Gagandeep, Rajesh restrict UP
Chandigarh, November 7 Put in to bat by Punjab, Uttar Pradesh were 239 for eight at close of play on the opening day. For Punjab, Gagandeep Singh and Rajesh Sharma were the best bowlers of the day. They rarely erred in line and length and were instrumental in restricting Uttar Pradesh to a modest score. Seamer Gagandeep was the pick of the bowlers while Rajesh bowled a controlled spell of off-spin. Both ended the day with three wickets apiece. But for the valiant efforts of Rohit Parkash, Uttar Pradesh innings would have been in total disarray. At the end of the day’s play the doughty Rohit was just four runs short of the coveted three-figure mark. Suresh Raina and No 8 batsman Praveen Gupta were the next highest scorers with 42 and 21 runs, respectively. Rohit looked composed throughout the day and his concentration rarely wavered. He acquitted himself well as a strong off-side player and hit most of his boundaries in the area. Punjab, who took the new ball after bowling their stipulated quota of overs towards the fag end of the day, failed to ruffle the batsman. Rohit has so far hit 11 boundaries in his undefeated 261-ball essay. Skipper Mohammad Kaif, who arrived late yesterday after playing in the Test series against Australia, proved a failure. He was done in by Gagandeep, who trapped him lbw after the batsman had scored 14. Earlier, Gagandeep had sent back Jyoti P Yadav, castling the batsman after he had scored 9. With two down for 39, this was not the type of start Uttar Pradesh would have expected. Rohit was then joined by Raina. Both batsmen were then involved in 64-run stand for the third wicket, the most fruitful of the innings which took the score past 100-run mark. Debutant seamer VRV Singh had Raina caught by Ricky in the third slip. Rajesh took charge and took three wickets on a trot to leave the visitors struggling. The slide was temporarily halted by brief 36-ball 21 by Praveen Gupta. With just two wickets in hand and Punjab having a strong batting line-up, Uttar Pradesh bowlers would be required to be at their best to keep their team in the contest. Intikhab Alam, Punjab coach, mentioned off-spinner Rajesh Sharma while praising his bowlers and looked satisfied after the day’s play. VRV Singh and Gaurav Gupta, who made their Ranji Trophy debut, are products of DAV School, Sector 8, Coaching Centre run by Sukhwinder Bawa. Jaffer hits ton against Railways
New Delhi, November 7 Jaffer gave the kind of start that Mumbai had hoped for as he unleashed an array of strokes at the Karnail Singh stadium and seemed set for a huge knock before he fell to the second new ball at close on the opening day. The right-hander's 157 came in 253 balls, spanned 360 minutes and contained 20 fours and a six. Home captain Sanjay Bangar was left to rue his decision as Mumbai reached 261 for three, a modest score by modern standards but far from what he would have settled for in the morning. Amol Muzumdar was unbeaten on 62 when Jaffer snicked J P Yadav to wicketkeeper Sudhir Wankhede off the penultimate ball of the last over of the day. Das strikes ton for Bengal
Kolkata: Opener Arindam Das struck a fine knock of 111 to give Bengal a headstart before the hosts, bolstered by the last-minute inclusion of Sourav Ganguly, lost quick wickets to cull a modest 275 for six on the opening day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Elite division group league match against Karnataka here today. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bengal seemed to be heading for a big total as openers Das and Deep Dasgupta played steady to amass 199 runs in the first wicket. But, a middle-order collapse saw the hosts finishing at 275 for six at the close with Ganguly (12 batting) and Sourashis Lahiri (19 batting) at the crease. Hyderabad 83 for five
Chennai: Hyderabad were 83 for five in the first innings against Tamil Nadu on the opening day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Elite 'B' league cricket match here today. Electing to bat, when play began well past lunch session, Hyderabad lost opener Daniel Manohar caught by skipper Hemang Badani at second slip off medium pacer M R Srinivas. Rao impresses
Indore: Y Venugopal Rao cracked an unbeaten century but Andhra Pradesh were in a precarious against hosts Madhya Pradesh on the opening day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match played at Usharaje stadium here today. Andhra Pradesh were 266 for the loss of six wickets when the stumps were drawn for the day with Venugopal Rao remaining unbeaten on 112 runs which included 20 fours.

Mohun Bagan in Durand Cup final
New Delhi, November 7 Ibrebru first missed a controversial penalty in the 70th minute of the match and then again messed up the last penalty kick in the tie-breaker after the two teams were locked goal-less during the regulation time and 30 minutes extra time. Substitute Zehry Jirsanga, Mehtab Hossain, Sunil Chetri, Dulal Biswas and Dharamjit Singh converted the spot kicks for Bagan while Bello Razaq, Jothi Kumar, Fredy Mascarenhas and Samson Singh (substitutes) scored for Salgaocar. It was an exciting battle at the Ambedkar Stadium between the Goans and Bagan, bolstered by the return of Tomba Singh and Jirsanga to make up for the absence of Brazilian Eduwardo Chacun, who had to sit out after picking up two yellow cards. Both Salgaocar and Bagan messed up a number of chances but the Kolkatans attacked with more vigour after the introduction of Tomba, who did national duty other day in Kuwait, in the 36th minute. The exciting tempo continued after the change of ends with the two African strikers Felix and Bagan’s James going close to opening their account.

Alok Kumar, Dharminder enter quarterfinals
Ludhiana, November 7 Dhruv was on the verge of victory when he had an easy nine-ball chance in the centre pocket. But the youthful exuberance prompted him to try and take the ball in the top pocket — a difficult proposition. The ball wobbled and stopped in the jaws of the pocket. Had it gone into the pocket, it would have clinched the tie 7-5 in Dhruv’s favour. Instead, Lilly got the nine-ball to win the rack and consequently the match 7-6. Continuing with his winning streak, Alok Kumar of Punjab displayed awesome form to trounce Gagandeep from Himachal Pradesh 7-2. There was a commotion in the stands when the referee decided the third rack in favour of Alok after his opponent fouled on three consecutive occasions. Gagandeep’s supporters objected to it, prompting Gagandeep to lodge a protest.
Referee Ajay Rustogi and C Kapur were summoned, who gave the verdict in favour of Alok Kumar. Subsequently, in the pre-quarter- finals ,Alok gave a lesson or two to young Saurav Kothari, drubbing him 7-1 in a one-sided affair.
