Aussies close escape routes for India
Stretch overall lead to 415

Nagpur, October 28
Australia laid the foundation for a historic series win on Indian soil with their batsmen doing the consolidation job to stretch their overall lead to 415 runs in the third cricket Test here today.

The left-handed Simon Katich took centrestage with a controlled knock of 99 after the visitors refused to enforce the follow on for the second time in the series, despite having a first innings lead of 213 runs by skittling out India for a paltry 185.

Katich missed what could have been his second Test century as he fell to spinner Murali Kartik late in the day but the visitors had put themselves firmly in the driver's seat by reaching a commanding 202 for three at close on the third day.

First innings centurion Damien Martyn was batting on a cautious 41 and Michael Clarke (10) was giving him company at stumps on what turned out to be a highly disappointing day for the home team.

The Australians, seeking to record their first series win on Indian soil in 35 years, took just 14.5 overs to clean up the last five Indian wickets with the lanky Jason Gillespie doing the bulk of the damage with figures of five for 56.

Glenn McGrath, making his 100th Test appearance, finished with impressive figures of 25-13-27-3 which played a big role in strangulating the Indian top order batsmen on a grassy track at the VCA stadium.

Zaheer got the ball to seam after pitching and that troubled the left handers consistently. Hayden (9) in particular was circumspect and was bowled by the left arm seamer after lunch.

Kartik had Langer (30) caught in the deep by Laxman and his quicker one that trapped Katich plumb in front left the batsman one short of what would have been his first hundred overseas.

But, after a lull in scoring in the second session when the scoreboard was stuck at the lunch score of 19 for 45 minutes, the Aussies picked up the scoring rate to tighten the screws on the hosts.

Katich struck Kumble for a four and six in an over before tea. He used his wrist to optimum effect against the spinners to keep the scoreboard ticking.

And if the Indians cherished any hopes of respite after Katich's dismissal, Damien Martyn (41) poured water on them with his smooth driving.

The first innings centurion opened his account by driving a full toss from Kartik to midwicket fence. He continued to have a stranglehold on the bowlers who soon fell back on the leg-side attack to check the flow of runs.

Clarke joined the party late in the day, cutting Kumble for two successive boundaries.

But the Indians lost the plot when they pressed on with Tendulkar who failed to produce a wicket which was the need of the hour.

When Kumble and Kartik began to bowl in tandem, Katich was well set.

The left hander brought up his fifty with a cover driven boundary off Virender Sehwag in 91 balls.

The intense battle between the two teams also saw words being exchanged between captain Rahul Dravid and Justin Langer although umpire Aleem Dar intervened to let things not get out of control.

Earlier in the morning, speedster Jason Gillespie helped Australia polish off the last five Indian wickets with the second new ball with an aggressive spell.

The 29-year-old South Australian picked up three wickets to finish with impressive figures of 5 for 56, his eighth five-wicket haul in an innings in 57 Tests.

Shane Warne (2 for 47) and Glenn McGrath (3 for 27) picked up one wicket apiece in the morning as India, after resuming at 146 for five, collapsed in a heap within 8.5 overs after the new ball had been summoned.

The tourists bowled out India for a meagre 185 off 91.5 overs in the first innings in reply to their 398. The hosts lost their last five wickets for 39 runs.

Warne accounted for Parthiv Patel in his first over of the morning, by having the Indian wicketkeeper caught in the slip cordon.

Patel and Mohd Kaif, who made the innings' highest score of 55 with seven fours and a six, put on 47 runs for the sixth wicket in 25.3 overs.

Gillespie then claimed the wickets of Ajit Agarkar (15), Murali Kartik (3) and last man Zaheer Khan (0).

Kumble remained unbeaten on 7 after a stay of 40 minutes.

Ganguly's injury not serious: Leipus

Nagpur, October 28
Indian cricket team physiotherapist Andrew Leipus today said captain Sourav Ganguly was not ruled out of the fourth Test against Australia.
Leipus said Ganguly was being monitored on a daily basis and a clear statement on his progress could be made over the coming days after studying what effect the medication has had on his injury.

"The bone scan has revealed that it is not a serious injury. There is a swelling on the lower hip joint caused by the accumulation of fluid which has been causing him (Ganguly) pain," Leipus said.

"He is now receiving medical treatment for this condition and his progress will be monitored carefully over the next few days." Ganguly pulled out of the third Test at the last moment.

His availability for the fourth and final Test, starting in Mumbai on November 3 came in doubt after a brief statement by the team management failed to put a date on his return to action.

The statement merely said that after a medical check-up, it was revealed that Ganguly suffered from "intra-articular pathology of the right hip joint noted by increased synovial fluid accumulation." —PTI

Ranbir denies quitting as BCCI chief
Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 28
Mr Ranbir Singh Mahendra, President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has categorically denied reports that he is stepping down from the post. There were reports in the electronic media late last night that Mr Ranbir Singh had resigned his post even as the Supreme Court was hearing a petition in regard to the BCCI elections.

Speaking to The Tribune by telephone from Bhiwani where he is based, Mr Ranbir Singh asserted that he was the elected President of the BCCI and there was no reason why he should resign. An any case, no strictures had been passed against him by anybody and he continued to be the board president.

He said such reports probably emanated from elements disgruntled with the smooth functioning of the cricket board and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Mr Ranbir Singh was of the view that once elections to the BCCI had been conducted all units were working in close cooperation with each other even if they had voted against him in the Kolkata election last month. This was particularly so now tat India were involved in a keen battle with the Australians.

Mr Ranbir Singh disclosed that he would spell out his future plans for the board once the Supreme Court gave its verdict on the case.

In any case, the ongoing projects of the board were going on smoothly, he asserted. The arrangements for the tours of different teams was also going as per schedule, he remarked.

Mr Ranbir Singh said he would visit Mumbai, venue of the fourth Test between India and Australia, and have a pep talk with the Indian team members.

He said given the way the BCCI functions, even if the BCCI President did not visit the venue of a Test the organisational work at the Test venue did not suffer and things went on smoothly.

Kerala oust Services to enter Santosh Trophy final
M.S. Unnikrishnan

New Delhi, October 28
Kerala scored once in each half to oust Services 2-0 and enter the final of the 59th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.

Kerala hung on to a goal scored by Abdul Naushad in the 29th minute before adding the second goal during injury time, just two minutes before the final hooter, through Naushad Pari to shut out Services. Services played their hearts out, despite being reduced to 10 men in the 42nd minute of first half, and put up a stiff resistance to ward off the Kerala raids.

Kerala too lost a man in the 27th minute of second half, to make it an even fight. But Services failed to cash in on their chances to help Kerala play an encore.

Kerala had beaten Services 3-2 in the semi-final of the 58th edition of the Santosh Trophy at Imphal (Manipur) last year.

Though Kerala won the match, Services custodian N Abungobi Singh walked away with the IOC Man of the Match award, and a cash prize Rs 7500. He brought off miraculous saves to deny Kerala a second goal till the very end.

Kerala entered the Santosh Trophy final for the fourth time in a row, and 12 times overall. They have lifted the trophy four times and were runners-up seven times.

The holders Manipur will take on Punjab in the second semi-final tomorrow at 2.30 p m. The final will be played on Sunday.

Services started promisingly, putting the Kerala goal under pressure when they forced three flag kicks in the first two minutes. Kerala survived those anxious moments and several other flag kicks as the match wore on.

But the contest warmed up only after Kerala took the lead in the 29th minute. Shabbir Ali, the nippy medio, fashioned a fine move, and then passed on the ball to Abdul Hakkeem on the right. Hakeem relayed a minus pass into the box, and Abdul Naushad, who had positioned himself perfectly in front of the goal, let go a stiff right footer, which zoomed into the net like a bullet (1-0).

The otherwise agile Abungobi Singh was caught immobile and stunned, though in the rest of the match, he was in his elements, despite nursing an ankle injury.

Services launched a series of assaults on Kerala, but strikers Shaji D’Silva, Vijay Thapa and Reghu Kumar missed the mark narrowly.

Reghu Kumar, however, could not remain in the field for long as he was shown the red card when he received his second yellow card within a span of 15 minutes, for felling Kerala captain Ignatious, who was trying to cut in from the left side of the box with the ball, after a pleasing dribble down the left wing.

Though Services played with ten men for almost 30 minutes, Kerala could not cash in on their numerical advantage, as Abungobi Singh adopted stone-walling tactics. It became a “level-playing field” only when Kerala lost a man too, their dependable defender Pradeep NP, to a red card.

Pradeep did a rough tackle on Services striker Shaji D’Silva and referee Benjamin D’Silva promptly pulled out the yellow card. The yellow card was flashed at Pradeep for a second time when he exchanged hot words with referee. (two yellow cards make up a red card).

Kerala will miss his tough tackles in the in the final, putting their defence very susceptible to pressure.

Kerala also exhausted their three substitutions in a bid to energise their attack, which paid off when substitutes T Usman and Naushad Pari played in tandem to strike the second goal at injury time.

Usman took the ball up with a fine dribble and ball control before chipping it to Naushad Pari inside the box for making a nice placement (2-0). Pari was guilty of squandering two open chances and the goal came as a timely atonement.

The leader, Naren Kumar, said the Chandigarh round was important, but added that the three rounds after this one would also be crucial and he would have to work hard to maintain his lead.

Second-placed Mathais, a popular figure on the rally circuit, is virtually following in the footsteps of Naren Kumar, who has been his mentor. Having conducted a reconnaissance of the rally route with other rallyists, he exuded confidence and hoped to pocket valuable points from this round.
