Harassment of sister for dowry ‘drove’ her to suicide

Failure in examination, harassment of her elder sister for dowry and fear of not too bright future had led a 23-year-old girl to commit suicide by consuming some poisonous substance while she travelled in a bus from Phagwara to Ludhiana recently.

Belgian doctor converts to Hinduism
Ludhiana, November 9
Impressed and fascinated by the culture that gave the world the science of ayurveda, a Belgian doctor converted to Hinduism “to go into the deep roots of this culture”. Dr Boedt Lifyaan, who had come here to participate in the Lord Dhanwantri’s Jayanti celebrations organised here today at Dhanwantri Temple, turned “too emotional within a couple of days” that he decided to adopt Hinduism.

Nine held for gambling

The police here booked nine persons under the Gambling Act yesterday. Of the six cases, three were registered at the Sarabha Nagar police station.

SC/BC teachers to stage dharna near CM’s house

The SC/BC Teachers Union of Fatehgarh Sahib district at a meeting held here yesterday, decided to participate along with their families in a dharna to be staged on November 21 in front of the residence of Captain Amrainder Singh, Chief Minister, Punjab. The meeting was presided over by the state vice-president of the union, Mr Karnail Singh Gobindgarh.

Shiv Batalvi nite was organised on Sunday by the local Natak Kala Sangam at the outdoor stadium. Around a dozen poets recited the poems and songs of Batalvi.
