Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, November 9
As many as 200 members participated in a training camp organised by the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, at Kairon Kisan Ghar here today. The event was sponsored by Nagarujna Agrichemicals for members of the Punjab Kisan Club.

Welcoming the participants, Dr Harmel Singh Atwal said paddy straw could be cleared by spreading it in cattle sheds and using it as a fertiliser. It could also be sold to the power-generating unit at Jalkheri village near Patiala. PAU scientists had developed a machine for chopping straw, but being costly it was beyond the reach of a large number of farmers. So it could be purchased by a group of farmers or societies.

Dr Daljit Singh, an expert on vegetables, talked about the marketing system of vegetables. He said two methods-low tunnel and high tunnel-could be used for sowing the nursery plants of chilli CH-3, brinjal BH-1, BH-2 and tomatoes. In the case of the former, polythene bags could be used for maintaining temperature for the plants even at night time while in the latter process, the plants could be covered with a long sheet of polythene and these vegetables were ready within 25-30 days, benefiting the farmers.

Commenting on organic farming, Dr Viraj Bery, said in case of organic farming, no insecticide, pesticide, weedicide and chemical fertiliser was used. The weeds were rooted out manually and the crop being of good quality, fetched a higher price.

Dr Manish Anand, area manager of the company, said deficiency of zinc and potash in the soil could be overcome by super-zinc sold by the company. Dr N K Sharma, zonal development manager of the company, said the produce point prepared by the company destroyed the weeds- gulli danda and wild oat-without damaging the crop. It could be used on the pea crop also, he added.

Mr Baldev Singh Landha proposed a vote of thanks and Mr Hardev Singh, secretary of the club, said the next meeting of the club would be held on December 2 at 10 am at Kairon Kisan Ghar.
