Dental camp for industrial workers held

Ludhiana, October 30
A free dental check up camp for industrial workers was organised by Vardhman Spinning and General Mills in the workers colony on the Chandigarh Road in collaboration with Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College and Hospital here yesterday.

Inaugurating the camp, Mr V.K. Goyal, Chief Executive of the company, observed that the main objective of the camp was to provide an opportunity to industrial workers and their families to have dental check-up free of cost and to learn the basics about the dental health and hygiene. Dr Gagan Dogra, Reader and Head of Department in the BJS Dental College gave tips on dental care to the workers and their family members.

A team of dental specialists, headed by Dr V.K. Kapila, carried out check up of around 500 workers. Counselling sessions were organised for the participants to educate them about dental care, balanced diet, nutrition, mother and child care and common dental ailments.

Sacred Heart dominate in fencing meet

Hosts Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, dominated the proceeding by bagging five medals on the opening day of the inaugural Ludhiana District Fencing Tournament here today.

In the epee event for boys (u-14 years) section, Dilawar of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School proved his mettle over his opponents and bag the gold medal. Ranveer of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, finished runner-up while Nirbhai of A S Senior Secondary School, Khanna, and Akarsh Kaura of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar shared the third spot.

In sabre (boys u-14), Aarshpreet Singh of Tagore Public School got the better of Danveer of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, to clinch the gold. The third position was shared by Ajaypal Gill of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, and Karan of Tagore Public School, Ludhiana.

In the boys (u-14) foil event, Ranbir Singh Cheema of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, pipped Deep Singh Bharat of Tagore Public School to secure the gold medal. Gurpawan Singh and Aarshpreet Singh of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar and Tagore Public School finished at a third place.

Earlier, Mr A.K. Sharma, Superintendent, Central Excise Customs, President of the District Fencing Association, Ludhiana, inaugurated the two-day meet. Mr Newton, head of physical education, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, along with members of the teaching faculty were also present on the occasion.

Guru Nanak Public School overall champion

Guru Nanak Public School, Mullanpur, garnered 268 points and emerged as overall champions in the XIII Ludhiana Sahodaya Schools Athletics Meet which concluded at the GGN Public School, Rose Garden, here today. Hosts GGN Public School secured 246 and had to content with the second place. The third spot went to Raikot Public School which got 206 points.

Dhanraj Singh of GGNPS, Ludhiana, and Gurleen Kaur of GNPS, Mullanpur, were adjudged the best athletes among boys and girls (U-19 years). In the U-16 years category, Rohit of GGNPS, Ludhiana, in boys section and Amandeep Kaur of GHGPS, Sidhwan Khurd, in the girls section were declared the best athletes.

In the boys (U-14 years), Manvinder Singh of Sutlej Public School, Ludhiana was named the best athlete while title in the girls section was shared by Simarjit Kaur of Raikot Public School and Rajandeep Kaur of GNPS, Mullanpur.

Dr S.S. Johl, Vice-Chairman, Punjab State Planning Board, gave away the prizes.

Volleyball trials begin from Nov 5

Ludhiana, October 30
Trials to select the Ludhiana district sub junior boys and girls' teams will be conducted at Guru Nanak Stadium on November 2 at 11 a m, according to Mr Raj Kumar, president of Ludhiana District Volleyball Association.

Boys born on or after January 1, 1989, and girls born on or after January 1, 1990, are eligible for the trials.

The selected players will represent Ludhiana in the Punjab Sub-Junior Volleyball Championship slated to be held at Khadoor Sahib, Amritsar from November 5 to 7 at Sri Guru Angad Dev College.

SDM XI beat SSP XI

Ludhiana, October 30
Thanks to Varinder Patwari's innings of 75, SDM XI, Jagraon, defeated SSP XI, Jagraon, by seven wickets in the annual cricket match played at the Lala Lajpat Rai DAV College ground here today.

In a 20-over match, batting first, the SSP XI, made 113 runs for the loss of eight wickets. The main contributor was Kewal Singh who scored 48 runs.

For SDM XI, Varinder Patwari, Gurmeet Singh, Ashwani Patwari and Sarabjot Singh bowled well.
