2 guest houses sealed for flouting rules

A team of the Enforcement Wing of the Chandigarh Administration today sealed two guest houses for alleged violation of building use. Hotel Paradise in Sector 7 and Hotel Platinum in Sector 35 were sealed by a team of the Administration this afternoon.

Engg student attacked, hospitalised
Dera Bassi, October 20
Certain armed youths assaulted a student of Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, here today. The youths who were armed with sharp-edged weapons later were chased by students of the Institute.

One held for having fake law degree
Chandigarh, October 20
Sector 17 Police Station team has arrested a person who had enrolled as a lawyer in the Bar Council on the basis of a fake law degree. Vinod Kumar Goel was arrested from Mansa after being booked under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC.

Estate Office clerk held for graft

The CBI today arrested a clerk in the Commercial Branch of the Estate Office in Sector 17 while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.

MEET Sooraj Thapar, television and theatre personality of ‘Ham Saat Aath hain’ fame. He is in the town to visit his sister who is married in Chandigarh. He visits city every year when he is on pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi. On the way back the city provides him the much-needed homely stopover. Traffic on the Kalka-Ambala highway was disrupted for more than two-and-a-half hours as a truck got struck at the middle of the Ghaggar river bridge on the Kalka-Ambala highway in Bhankharpur village, this afternoon.

One arrested for kidnapping minor
Chandigarh, October 20
The police has arrested the person who allegedly kidnapped a minor girl from Milk Colony, in Dhanas village, on October 15. According to the police, the father of the girl had filed a complaint in the Sector 11, police station, yesterday that his daughter was kidnapped by Chotta Singh of Solkhia village in Ropar district.

Stereo systems stolen from 4 vehicles
Mohali, October 20
Thieves decamped with stereo systems and cassettes from four vehicles in Phase XI early here today. The thieves broke windows of five vehicles to gain entry. A stereo from one of the cars could not be stolen as the anti-theft alarm set off.

Gold ornaments stolen
Panchkula, October 20
Gold ornaments worth rupees one lakh were stolen from two houses in BEL colony, Sector 14, while the occupants were away, here today. Neighbours at the colony and employees of the BEL factory, Mr Gulab Singh and Mr Sanjiv Gaura claimed that ornaments valued at Rs 35,000 and Rs 70,000 respectively, were stolen from their houses while they were away to work.

Around 50 Students of the IITT College of Engineering, Pojewal, have visited the Air Force Station, Chandigarh, as a part of their training. Having watched on TV the dare-devil acrobatics of the 'jaan-baaz pilots' of ' Surya Kiran' on Air Force Day, the students were a inspired lot, full of "josh" to get acquainted with the life, training and professionalism of this mighty force.

The UT Red Cross has decided to bring all available ambulances and funeral vans under one umbrella, with a common telephone number, offering round the clock service. It will set up a control room which will act as a help line.

Prof Talwar elected Fellow
Chandigarh, October 20
The Director of the PGI, Prof K.K. Talwar, has been elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, which will be effective from January 1, 2005. Prof Talwar is a renowned cardiologist and was the first to use biopsy to perform study on myocardial involvement which is prevalent in Asia and central American countries.

Digvijay whams Anmol to clinch u-10 title

Digvijay Singh Mehta clinched the under- 10 boys title in the ongoing Head Total Tennis Championship by overpowering Anmol Singh Bains 6-0, 6-0. Digvijay also reached the finals of boys under -12 category by defeating Gurinder Singh with a score of 8-2.

New shooting star on horizon
Chandigarh, October 20
Mansimran Singh, a student of class IX, St John’s High School, Chandigarh, who turned 14 years last month, bagged the silver medal in the .22 ISSF SB Rifle junior prone civilian event in the 48th National Shooting Championships held at Indore from October 5 to 15, 2004. This was his first national event and he competed with shooters who were up to 21 years in this category.

Veteran bags gold in  US meet
Chandigarh, October 20
Gurdev Singh, a veteran athlete aged 66 years and a resident of Mohali has brought laurels to the country when he bagged a gold medal in the above 65 years section in long jump in the Connecticut Athletic Meet held at Hartford, USA, held in July this year.
