New shooting star on horizon
A.S. Prashar
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 20
Mansimran Singh, a student of class IX, St John’s High School, Chandigarh, who turned 14 years last month, bagged the silver medal in the .22 ISSF SB Rifle junior prone civilian event in the 48th National Shooting Championships held at Indore from October 5 to 15, 2004.

This was his first national event and he competed with shooters who were up to 21 years in this category. This is a new record which a shooter has accomplished at the tender age of 14.

His foray in the shooting arena began just a year ago when he participated in the 28th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship 2003 where he secured the bronze medal in the Sub-Junior Air Rifle category. He also secured fourth position in the .22 SB rifle in the junior prone event.

In the 5th Chandigarh State Inter-School Championship 2003, he secured silver medal in 10 metre air rifle. In December, 2003, he struck a gold medal at the 28th Northern India Shooting Championship held at Dehra Dun in the .22 ISSF SB rifle junior prone event.

In August, 2004, he reaped a rich haul of medals in the 29th Chandigarh State Shooting Championships. He won a gold medal in 50 metre .22 ISSF SB rifle junior prone event, a silver medal in 50 metre .22 ISSF SB rifle senior prone event, a silver medal in 50 metre .22 ISSF SB Rifle Senior team event and a bronze medal in 50 metre .22 ISSF SB Rifle Junior 3 position event. In the 6th Chandigarh State Inter-School Championships 2004, he secured a silver medal in 10-metre air pistol.

He says he owes his success to his father, Sukhdeep Singh, who is his mentor and guide.

Mansimran also participated in the National .22 Rifle Junior 3 Position match but could not do well in the event because of lack of practice due to shortage of ammunition. This happened because despite repeated requests the Chandigarh Administration did not enhance the ammunition quota for practice.

Sukhdeep Singh also did not take part in the big bore rifle event at the nationals because the Chandigarh Administration did not enhance his quota of ammunition. Due to the non-cooperative attitude of the administration, Chandigarh has lost an assured medal chance and wasted one year of Sukhdeep Singh in the competition.
