Bangalore, October 9
India were on the brink of one of their biggest Test defeats after yet another batting collapse put Australia on course for a comprehensive victory in the first cricket Test here today.

Chasing a record target of 457 on a wearing track, the home team was gasping at an embarrassing 105 for six at close on the penultimate day, still trailing by 351 runs with just four wickets in hand.

Dravid was batting on a gritty 47 along with Irfan Pathan (7) with India still in danger of suffering their biggest defeat in Test history -- a margin of 329 runs against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in 1996-97.

The Indian batting disintegrated under the weight of a huge target. Whatever hopes one had of Sourav Ganguly's men making amends for the first innings debacle evaporated in thin air with the dismissal of Virender Sehwag for zero.

Umpire Billy Bowden's decision to rule him leg before might have been contentious, as TV replays showed a thick inside edge, but Sehwag's mouthing of the umpire -- sure to invite penal action -- only reflected the frustration of a batsman woefully out of form.

To add injury to insult was the run out of the captain although Dravid might have to share a fair bit of the blame as he failed to respond to Ganguly's call in time and leaving him little time to get back to his crease.

Shane Warne was one wicket away from equalling Muttiah Muralitharan's world record tally of 532 after having V V S Laxman out for the second time in the match.

But it was the impeccable line and length of Glenn McGrath that dismantled the Indian top order.

The 34-year old New South Wales seamer had an opening spell figures of 5-4-1-1, and returned to break the fifth wicket stand between Dravid and Yuvraj Singh by inducing a faint edge of the latter's bat. McGrath ended the day with two for nine from 12 overs.

Sehwag lasted seven balls before McGrath rapped him on the pads.

Aakash Chopra (5) had a lucky escape early on when an awkwardly rising delivery from Jason Gillespie bounced off the shoulder of his bat but fell out of Matthew Hayden's reach in the slip cordon.

But the right hander lasted just a little longer, falling leg before to the same bowler in the fourth over.

Then followed Ganguly's run out before Warne delivered the killer blow when his flipper caught Laxman (3) plumb in front.

Yuvraj Singh picked Warne with precision. But his tendency to poke at deliveries away from the body landed him in trouble once again.

In the meantime, Dravid was sustaining India's hopes but living dangerously. He was having trouble against Warne and when on 14 a faint edge tipped Gilchrist's gloves before beating the first slip fielder to third man boundary.

But 'The Wall' soon acquired the solidity that had come to personify his innings and began to time his shots well.

Earlier, Australia were all out for 228 with Harbhajan Singh claiming his 13th career five-wicket haul.

It was also the sixth successive occasion the offie had claimed five wicket in an innings against the Aussies on home soil.

The Turbanator started the day by dismissing Michael Clarke and the well-set Damien Martyn to put the skids under the Aussies.

Sri Lanka rout Zimbabwe

Rawalpindi , October 9
Sri Lanka crushed Zimbabwe by seven wickets here today to virtually guarantee their place in the final of the triangular series against hosts Pakistan.
The Sri Lankans skittled the Zimbabweans for 104 and then romped home for 108 for 3 in just over 18 overs to leave the Africans needing a miracle if they are to progress to the October 16 final.

Zimbabwe, who have just one point from three matches, now must pull off an unlikely victory with a bonus point against Sri Lanka on Monday. They must also hope Pakistan beat Sri Lanka with a bonus point when the two teams meet in their last league match in Lahore on October 14, to have any chance of making the final.

First-ever Astro-turf in rural area
Prabhjot Singh
Tribune News Service

Bhaini Sahib, October 9
India’s first-ever Astro-turf in a rural area — Bhaini Sahib, near Ludhiana — and in the private sector has put the Namdharis in line for a unique distinction.
Gifted by a Holland company, the Namdharis have spent Rs 42 lakh on the import, transportation and installation of the latest version of the polymer-based surface. Of this, Rs 10 lakh came as a special grant from the Punjab Government.

The Bhaini Sahib Astro-turf, which will be formally inaugurated on October 14 by the Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, will thus be the fifth such field in Punjab after Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala. Ludhiana can now boast of two Astroturfs — other one is at Punjab Agricultural University.

Namdharis association with hockey dates back to 1978 when they started their team with former international Baldev Singh (of Nigeria) as their coach. Two years later, this team with its unique white sports gear — tapering turbans and knee-long “kachheras” (traditional Sikh costume) — was in headlines for winning the prestigious Jawahar Lal Nehru Hockey Tournament for juniors in New Delhi.

Known for their robust tactics and superb fighting qualities, it soon made a place for itself as one of top teams in the country, producing in the process some players for the national team. Namdhais could topple any top team any day and won several tournaments.

Hardeep Singh Grewal, Didar Singh Sr, Didar Singh Jr, Gurcharan Singh, Gurmukh Singh Gama and Harpal Singh are some of the top national players the sect has produced. Besides Baldev Singh (Nigeria), Baldev Singh (Shahbad Markanda) and Hardeep Singh Grewal have been responsible for coaching and training of their subsequent teams.

In fact, the head of the Namdhari sect, Satguru Jagjit Singh, has been a sportsman himself. Inspite of his old age, he is a regular badminton player. In his younger days, he dabbled in hockey. In fact, the love for this unofficial national sport has been in the blood of Namdhari sect. Thakur Udey Singh, a nephew of the Satguru, had been a hockey player himself. He was a contemporary of Surjit Singh, one of greatest deep defenders Punjab has produced in post-independence era.

“We plan to introduce Punjab state hockey league featuring top teams of the region,” says Thakur Udey Singh revealing that Bangalore-based Namdhari Seeds, of which he is the Managing Director, would be its sponsor.

Mr Rashpal Singh, who looks after the Namdhari Hockey Academy, says that a special tubewell has been commissioned for watering the synthetic surface. He says that for optimum utilisation of the surface, the academy had chalked out a complete programme. The playfield would be made available to other teams for training and practice games also.

Haryana State Games
Arrangements good, says DGP Malik
Sportspersons still grumble
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, October 9
Even as The Director-General of Police, Haryana, and Secretary-General of the Haryana Olympic Association, Mr M.S. Malik, today reviewed the arrangements for the participants of the 20th State Games and certified them as “good”, sportspersons and their coaches alleged that the food for players was in short supply.

Mr Malik presided over a meeting of coaches and managers of various participating teams at Sports Complex here this afternoon. He asked them to act responsibly and not to create ruckus over the food and lodging arrangements for the teams.

The meeting was called by the DGP following protests by the sportspersons over poor lodging and food arrangements at the Sector 21 Community Centre last night. Mr Malik asked the coaches and team managers to ensure that discipline was maintained. He said the organisers had made the best-possible arrangements.

He warned them against consuming liquor. “I will see to it that any officials on duty found consuming liquor during the games — be it policemen or team managers — will be booked,” he said.

Meanwhile, the sportspersons alleged that the food was in short supply. Shamsher, a wrestler from Hisar, alleged that there was no curd or chapatis at lunch hour. “They (the organisers) have to arrange food for 400 persons, but only 50 per cent of the participants get food.” Rakesh, an archer from Sirsa, too, alleged that the food for the participants was not adequate, though he said the lodging arrangements were good.

The mess contractor, however, said there was no shortage of food and that because of the proximity of the mess in Sector 21 to the Sports Complex, the players who were staying at Mansa Devi Complex, too, came to Sector 21 for lunch. “The number of persons was almost 700, and that is why there was a shortage of food,” he said.

Aqeel dashes Sridhar’s hopes, wins tennis title
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 9
Top-seeded Aqeel Khan of Pakistan pulled himself back after losing the first set to dash second seed Vinod Sridhar’s hopes of regaining the men’s singles title with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 victory in the final of the 13th DSCL National Open Tennis Championship at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association deco-turf court here today.

Aqeel, the 24-year-old from Karachi, who has had little experience of playing against left-handers, was coming into his own when he found help from unexpected quarters. He had lost the first set after being broken in the ninth game.

In the eighth game of the second set, Sridhar chased a forehand return so hard that he pulled a groin muscle.

Hard as the Chennai-based Sridhar tried by giving his all in his bid to break Aqeel’s serve in the ninth game, he was unable to pull that off and the Pakistani star hung on to claim the set with a break in the 12th game.

Aqeel won the next two sets on a canter as Sridhar found it tough to get out of the tangle he had got in.

“I am delighted to win the championship. It is a special feeling because as a youngster I always used to dream of playing in the Indian circuit,” Aqeel said, thanking the All-India Tennis Association and DSCL for extending him an invitation.

“I will be back in India more often and will surely come back to defend the title next year,” Aqeel Khan added optimistically.

Sridhar, who won the DSCL Open National title in 2002 when he outslugged Mustafa Ghouse in the final, was disappointed that the groin muscle pull put paid to his hopes.

“It is unfortunate and one has to live with it. Had I won the second set, I may have pushed myself a bit to win in straight sets,” he said.

Delhi’s Vivek Shokeen and Sanaa Bhambri claimed the boys and girls under-18 titles in contrasting styles. The second-seeded Shokeen, who won the ITF junior events in Mumbai and Gurgaon last month, stunned the top seed Rupesh Roy (Bengal) in three sets while the left-handed Sanaa beat Parul Goswami (Delhi), winning the second set with ease after being made to fight through the first.

The results (all finals): Men’s singles: Aqeel Khan (Pakistan) beat Vinod Sridhar (Tamil Nadu) 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1.

Boys under-18 singles: Vivek Shokeen (Delhi) beat Rupesh Roy (Bengal) 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Girls under-18 singles: Sanaa Bhambri (Delhi) beat Parul Goswami (Delhi) 7-5, 6-1.
