DGP promises free, fair byelections
Ludhiana, October 6
The Director-General of Police (DGP), Mr A.A. Siddiqui, promised free and fair byelections in Kapurthala and Garhshankar Assembly constituencies here today. He denied allegations that the Punjab police was helping the Congress and ruled out any scope for Central police forces in the state, claiming that the Punjab police could conduct free and fair elections.

Duping jobless from other states
Ludhiana, October 6
A migration racket appears to be in the making. People from Bihar, Jarkhand, parts of Uttar Pradesh and Orissa are to help then migrate to Punjab with the promises of well paid jobs. Inquiries by the Tribune revealed that a racket of travel agents and 'labour contractors' has come up in Ludhiana and also some other cities of the region, which takes money from unemployed and unsuspecting people in Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Jarkhand while promising them jobs in Punjab.

Indian music will survive, say Mishra brothers

"The future of classical music is very bright in India. After the young people get tired of cultural pollution and pop music, they are going to come back to their roots and realise the worth classical music. That is going to happen shortly", said the distinguished leading vocalists Rajan and Sajan Mishra at a press conference here today.

City to have waste disposal plant
Ludhiana, October 6
Ludhiana is all set to be the first city in the country to have Level-IV disposal of the bio-medical waste. It will be harmless and has already been adopted in the advanced countries. While a number of cities in the country are planning to introduce this technology, Ludhiana may end up to be the first in launching it.

9 kg tumour removed
Doraha, October 6
A tumour weighing 9 kg was removed from the stomach of a 21- year-old woman at Kular Hospital, Bija, on Monday.

Ms Suman Bhagat J&K minister for reforms in health sector
Ludhiana, October 6
Ms Suman Bhagat, Minister for Health, Jammu and Kashmir, today said that the health sector in her state had been the worst hit due to militancy. There was need to bring about reforms in the sector. Ms Bhagat, who was here on a private visit, said she had recently been given charge of the Health Ministry after her predecessor was elected to Parliament.

India, Pak need to share farm information

Dr M.S. Tiwana, Dean, College of Agriculture, PAU, has emphasised the need of sharing of information in the field of agriculture. University sources said he chaired a technical session during an international seminar on cotton held at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan.

Patwaris stage dharna
Samrala, October 6
Patwaris of this sub-division, including Machhiwara sub-tehsil, staged a dharna in front of tehsildar’s courts here on Wednesday in protest against the Vigilance Department of Ludhiana. The department has registered a case against patwari Rajinder Pal of Koom Kalan sub-tehsil. In the dharna, members of the kanungo association also participated.

CPI concerned at US envoy's offer

The district unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has expressed concern over the reported statement of the US Ambassador to India, Mr David C. Mulford, offering FBI support to Mr Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Assam, to investigate the bomb blasts in Assam.

Celebrations conclude
Mandi Gobindgarh, October 6
The five-day celebrations of the quadri-centenary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, organised by the local unit of the All-India Nirvair Khalsa Dal, concluded here this morning. A pandal was put up at the ground of Government Senior Secondary School here. A total of 845 persons were baptised at Gurdwara Guptsar Jassaran.

BCM School students win laurels in youth festival

Students of BCM School, Shastri Nagar, participated in Inter-School Youth Festival Harmony -2004 held at The Indian School, Bahrain, from September 27 to October 2. As many as 1000 students from different countries had participated in the youth festival and BCM was the only team from India.

NSS volunteer Amit Kumar Goyal of the College of Agriculture, PAU, has brought laurels to the varsity by winning the prestigious Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme Award for the year 2002-03.

Summer school for scientists

A summer school organised by the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources got underway here today. Thirty scientists from 15 agricultural universities and 3 ICAR institutes were participating in the event. Dr S.S. Two get life term for murder
Ludhiana, October 6
The Sessions Judge, Mr Baldev Singh, has sentenced Malkiat Singh and Amarjit Singh of Muksudran village to rigorous life imprisonment on the charge of killing Jasbir Singh of the same village by setting him ablaze. He ruled that the prosecution had proved the charges levelled against the accused and declined to grant leniency.

IMA ends Sun Pharma boycott
Ludhiana, October 6
The Indian Medical Association has ended the boycott of Sun Pharma, a drug company. The IMA had decided to boycott the company after one of its medical representatives had allegedly connived with some officials of the vigilance bureau resulting in trap of a medical officer.

Clinic for detection of congenital defects launched
Ludhiana, October 6
The Christian Medical College and Hospital today announced the start of an ante-natal check up clinic for the detection of congenital defects in foetus. A congenital defect is a health problem that happens with a baby's growth or development before birth. As many as four out of every 100 babies are born with a birth defect.
