Ludhiana, October 6 He said farmers had been integrating tree, crop and animal components for sustenance over the years and with the passage of time, agricultural components had been given priority over wood elements for self-sufficiency in food grains. He stated that the pressure due to increasing population had resulted in small holdings and consequently, lesser number of trees. Dr Gill said the introduction of high-yield crops had resulted in self-sufficiency in food grains, but its role in degrading natural resources could not be overlooked. He emphasised the need to copy nature by integrating trees, shrubs and bushes, besides high-value cash crops. Dr Gill favoured the preservation of and improvement in the traditional system, which had been evolved by trial and error by villagers. He said agroforestry, with its element of intercropping, was in essence an ecological model similar to natural systems and had an element of sustainability. He said there was limited scope for increasing the forest area in Punjab and agroforestry was a viable option for increasing tree cover in the state. Mr Malwinder Singh Tiwana, Dean, College of Agriculture, was the chief guest at the inaugural function while Dr K.R. Solanki, ADG (Agroforestry), was the guest of honour. Dr D.S.
