What may come as a surprise, the Chandigarh Administration in the past 40 years is yet to decide if it will get the exterior of the thousands of government houses white-washed and painted or will it allow the present state of non-maintenance to continue. Much to the humiliation of thousands of families living in Type XIII and Type XII houses, the Administration has a stock reply that the job to get the exterior of these houses repaired is not covered under the policy of maintenance.

Punjabi not given ‘much importance’ in Pak

There are not many story writers in Pakistan who write in Punjabi as the language is not given much importance by the nation. Urdu is the national language and Punjabi has to be learnt by people on their own as it is the mother tongue of a large number of people.

Scooterist hit by car, hospitalised
Chandigarh, October 5
Scooterist Devinder Kaur of Phase 3, Mohali was hit by a Santro car driven by Ankur, a resident of Sector 38-B, near Sector 51-52 turn, yesterday. She received injuries and was hospitalised. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 279 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 36, police station. He was later released on bail.

Impersonator held by Crime branch

Avtar Singh, 23, who impersonated as a dupatta seller at Burail village has been arrested by the Crime Branch after a year of hot pursuit. He was always on a prowl of rickshaw pullers, vegetable and other roadside vendors living in colonies and villages. He used to cheat those sending money orders to their families

Probe indicts 5 officials for defrauding Health Dept

The probe into the embezzlement of funds at General Hospital here has indicted five officials in its Accounts Branch. They are accused of defrauding the Health Department officials of Rs 10 lakh.

The Chandigarh police has booked man, his son and other relatives who had duped a jeweller of Rs 1.5 lakh.

4 held, stolen property recovered
Chandigarh, October 5
The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police has claimed to have worked out five theft cases and recovered Rs 80,000 worth of stolen property from four thieves arrested from different places in the city.

Rs 50,000 snatched by scooter-borne youths
Mohali, October 5
In two separate incidents cash and a gold chain were snatched by some youths in the town. Mr Sohan Singh, a resident of Sector 68 here, had withdrawn Rs 50,000 from a bank in Phase VII.

2 more Fiat car thieves arrested
Chandigarh, October 5
A team of the Sector 17 police station today arrested two more Fiat car thieves from Patiala. With today’s arrest, four thieves and a buyer of stolen property have been arrested in connection with the theft of Fiat cars, 32 of which have been stolen this year.

NSS camp held
Chandigarh, October 5
A NSS volunteer of GCG-11 presents a dance item during the valedictory function of NSS camp at their college The NSS unit of Punjab Engineering College started one-day camp with the theme “Health for Youth” on the college premises. Dr M.L. Gupta, office in charge of the NSS, inaugurated the camp. Around 450 volunteers are attending the camp. During the camp, the volunteers were briefed on micro-financing scheme in Janata Colony.

NCC Air Wing cadets excel
Chandigarh, October 5
NCC Air Wing cadets from Chandigarh have bagged gold in three of the five competitions organised during the Pre-Vayu Sainik Camp held at Ludhiana. The Chandigarh contingent had 23 cadets, including girls.

The local Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has dismissed the complaint alleging negligence in the treatment of a Sector 44 resident, Ms Bhupinder Pal Kaur Brar, by Deep Nursing Home, Sector 21.

Court finds Weights and Measures official guilty
Panchkula, October 5
Additional District and Sessions Judge, Ms Sneh Prashar, today held an Inspector of the Weights and Measures Department, and a contractor guilty of graft. The sentence will be pronounced tomorrow.

Inter-school TT meet from Oct 14
Chandigarh, October 5
The CBSE Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament-2004 for Cluster XIII will be organised by Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21-C, Chandigarh, from October 14 to 16. Teams from Chandigarh, Panchkula, Ambala, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will compete in this tournament. This tournament will be played as per the rules and regulation of the Table Tennis Federation of India.

Sweepers found missing from duty
Chandigarh, October 5
To check the practice of sweepers playing truant, the chairman of the Sanitation Committee, Mr Chander Mukhi Sharma, began inspections in different pockets of the city. These would be intensified in the next fortnight. While a number of sweepers were “missing”, some of them, for the first time, sent in their leave applications later in the day.
