Sweepers found missing from duty
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 5
To check the practice of sweepers playing truant, the chairman of the Sanitation Committee, Mr Chander Mukhi Sharma, began inspections in different pockets of the city. These would be intensified in the next fortnight. While a number of sweepers were “missing”, some of them, for the first time, sent in their leave applications later in the day.

In Sector 22, which has 71 sweepers, 20 were found absent from duty while in Sector 24, 24 of the 42 sweepers were present when the inspection was carried out. Later, 10 applications for leave were received by the authorities. In the evening, a surprise check was carried out in Sector 47 where seven of the 32 sweepers were “bunking” duty and four were on leave. Similar checks were carried out in Sectors 18 and 19 as well yesterday and a number of sweepers were found absent from duty. One positive outcome of yesterday’s inspections was that some of the sweepers sent in their applications today. Till now, the authorities had no prior information of leave of these sweepers.

Also, by evening, Mr Sharma claimed that he began receiving threatening calls on his mobile phone. “They asked me to discontinue the drive and used abusive language. I have the numbers from which the calls came. However, I don’t intend to pursue the matter with the police though I have brought the matter to the notice of the Commissioner. Besides, I plan to intensify my drive against them to ensure that they fall in line and sanitation in the city does not suffer,” he said.

This is the first time that the Sanitation Committee has undertaken such a drive to identify sweepers who fail to abide by the rules. Action to be taken against the sweepers will also be finalised after similar inspections have been carried out in other sectors.
