Businessman’s family drugged, looted
Victim booked for not informing police about servants

Ludhiana, September 29
Two domestic servants allegedly drugged and looted the family of a businessman in the Model Town area last night. All members of the family have been admitted to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital here, where their condition is said to be stable.

Mr Sant Lal Kapoor, who along with his family members, was allegedly drugged and looted by his two servants, and forensic experts study fingerprints at the house of Mr Sant Lal Kapoor.

Rift among GNDEC teachers
Association suspends general secretary

Cracks in the faculty of the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC) Teachers Association became visible today when the association suspended its general secretary, Deepinder Singh, for “anti-association” activities. He had been holding classes while the association members were on strike.

One arrested for duping more than 60 youths
Ludhiana, September 29
Kulbir Singh Dhillon, who duped more than 60 youths under the pretext of sending them to Japan, was arrested by the Jagraon police today. He had sent one batch of his victims to Leh (Jammu and Kashmir) and left them to fend for themselves.

Dist gears up for Pulse Polio
Ludhiana, September 29
Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma has directed departments concerned to gear up to administer pulse polio drops to 5.20 lakh children (in the age group of 0 - 5 years) on National Immunisation Day on October 10 under Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation Campaign, 2004.

BJP comes to the rescue of ‘implicated’ councillor

Ludhiana, September 29
The district unit of the BJP today came to the rescue of its "implicated" councillor, Mr Gurdeep Singh Nittu, who has been booked by the police for allegedly manhandling a woman and her son in the Amarpura area of Ward Number 55. The BJP and the councillor concerned have denied these allegations.

Ex-pharmacist acquitted in corruption case
Ludhiana, September 29
Special Judge, Jaspal Bhatia has acquitted Tarlochan Singh, a former pharmacist of Government Hospital, Payal, in a corruption case, as the prosecution failed to prove the charges against him.

The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertaking has hailed the decision of the Chief Engineer, Punjab State Electricity Board (Central) for recommending action against an executive engineer and an SDO of the PSEB allegedly for demanding bribe from one person for the extension of the load.

He makes effigies to earn a living

A team of 15 artisans is currently busy making effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran at the Daresi grounds. These effigies would be burnt on the occasion of Dasehra on October 22.

Rajpura school wins shabad gayan contest
Ludhiana, September 29
On the second day of the regional-level literary and cultural competitions of the Punjab School Education Board, being held at Government Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University singing and dance competitions were organised. About 150 students from Mansa, Sangrur, Patiala and Ludhiana districts are participating in the fancy dress, lok geet and shabad gayan competitions.

Dr F.C. Shukla retires
Ludhiana, September 29
Dr Faqir Chand Shukla, Professor of Food Technology, Punjab Agricultural University, retired today after attaining the age of superannuation. Joining as a lecturer in 1970, Dr Shukla has served for 35 years and rose to become Professor in 1994.

PAU scientists back from Pak
Ludhiana, September 29
A delegation of PAU scientists led by Dr Darshan Singh, which was on a visit to the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan, since September 21 has returned to Ludhiana.

DMCH starts PUVA therapy

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital has set up a PUVA (Psoralen Plus UVA Light) therapy unit in its Department of Dermatology. Dr Alka Dogra, Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology, revealed that PUVA was the latest advancement in giving whole-body radiation.
