DMCH starts PUVA therapy

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital has set up a PUVA (Psoralen Plus UVA Light) therapy unit in its Department of Dermatology. Dr Alka Dogra, Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology, revealed that PUVA was the latest advancement in giving whole-body radiation. She added, “The machinery procured by the DMCH is one of the best in the country. With the initiative of Mr Brij Mohan Munjal, President, Managing Society, DMCH, and Mr Amrit Nagpal, Secretary,
Managing Society, DMCH, the setting up of PUVA unit has become possible. The therapy involves the combined use of a prescription, psoralen, and long-wave ultraviolet light (UVA) , which is given three times a week or on alternate days. Depending on the disease, the sittings may vary from 20 to 80 or even more. It is an effective treatment modality for chronic skin diseases like leukoderma, psoriasis, alopecia areata and lichen plalus. She said certain other chronic skin disorders could also be treated with PUVA.
