In an alleged violation of a Supreme Court order, a group of residents of Barwala village has again forcibly occupied five-acre plot belonging to a UK-based NRI.

GNDEC strike ends
Ludhiana, September 25
Students of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC) have called off their strike, going on for the past 12 days, and have announced that they will attend regular classes from Monday.

Relief for detained brothers
Ludhiana, September 25
The Supreme Court of India has set aside the detention of two brothers, Vinod Kumar Garg and Narsi Dass Garg, from here,who were detained under Section 3(1) of the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA). The orders were passed by the apex court on September 21, 2004.

Give Sehajdharis their right, says Dr Ranu
Ludhiana, September 25
The Sehajdhari Sikh Federation has appealed to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to grant a separate status to the Sehajdhari Sikhs on the occasion of quadricentennial year of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib to enable them to recognise their religion as their own because they are ‘‘not recognised as Sikhs by the SGPC and SAD (B) as they are neither Muslims, nor Hindus, Christians, Jains or Buddhists.’’

NGO to help uproot social evils
Ludhiana, September 25
The Gobind Foundation, an NGO, will work to help eradicate social evils like dowry, untouchability and the growing alcohol and drug problem in society. Talking to TNS, Mr Jagjit Singh Mukandpuri, Chairperson of the foundation, said a meeting of representatives from 100 villages of the district was held at Dehlon recently. The aim of the meeting was to have a unit in every village of the district . Members of the units would identify local problems and deal with those at the community level.

Ramlila committees resent admn rigmarole
Ludhiana, September 25
Various social and religious organisations, which have been holding Ramlilas in their respective areas for years now, are up in arms against the district administration for unnecessary harassment and interference in the religious affairs of Hindu community.

New language software introduced 
Ludhiana, September 25
UDAN, a software on Technical Advances in Punjabi language, culture, literature and art was introduced by the Institute of Contemporary Punjab Studies and Media Artists at Punjabi Bhawan here today. Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the programme of presentation of new software for the conversion of Gurmukhi script to Shahmukhi developed by Dr G.S Lehal and released first audio book of Jaswant Singh Zaffar.

Canara Bank Union to observe strike
Jagraon, September 25
The Canara Bank Staff Union is holding its 12th all India conference at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala from December 7 to 9. The bank employees will observe a two-day strike on October 5 and 6.

HEALTH

CMC staff threaten stir
Ludhiana, September 25
Barely a week after the resolution of the crisis in the Hero DMC Heart Centre, employees of the Christian Medical College (CMC) today threatened to go on a strike in case their demands were not met. The employees were scheduled to stage a demonstration today. However, the plan was later cancelled following a meeting with the Director, Dr Silas Charles, to sort out the issue. The negotiations were going on between the management and the employees till the filing of this report.

Mandeep Kaur struck twice as the team of Nankana Sahib Public School of Kila Raipur outplayed Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, team 2-0 to emerge as champions in the junior section of the Ludhiana District Ranjodh Kaur Grewal Memorial Hockey Tournament organised by the Ludhiana District Women Hockey Association at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.
