Picnic for tiny tots

Ludhiana, September 25
It was a fun and frolic day for students of Baba Isher Singh Senior Secondary Public School, BRS Nagar, here today. The school organised a picnic for students of Nursery to Class III. Three swimming pools were put up. Mr Santokh Singh Sahai, an educationist, was the chief guest.

Death condoled: The students, staff and management of the GHG Khalsa College at Gurusar in Ludhiana district condoled the death of nuclear scientist Dr Raja Ramanna. A two-minute silence was observed and a resolution, highlighting the contribution of Dr Ramanna, was read out.

Workshop: Mr Sanjeev Sharma conducted a workshop at the Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology for MBA and MCA students. He focused on ‘being yourself’. He said everybody had diverse roles which were played well only with clear, specified and declarative goals. The students were motivated to speak on what they wanted to be and how they were going to achieve it.

NAAC team: An NAAC peer team visited the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town, here on September 22 and 23. The team consisted of Prof S.D. Tripathi, Prof G.H. Gidwni and Dr N.D. Wani. The team scrutinised the functioning of all departments.

UK educationist: Mr Charlie Naylor, Vice-Principal, Tavistork College, Davin, England, paid a three-day visit to the MLD High School, Talwandi Kalan. The students asked questions about the environment, curriculum and punishment. A seminar was organised, in which teachers read out papers. Games and an exhibition kabaddi match were organised. Science and painting exhibitions were organised.

Prize distribution: Jain Public Senior Secondary School organised a prize distribution function here on Saturday. At least 200 students who had secured good positions in school and board examinations in March this year were awarded. Toppers of board examinations of Classes VIII, X and XII were given cash and mementoes.

Honoured: The staff of the GGN Khalsa College honoured Prof Harpreet Singh Dua, who had recently been elected to the Panjab University Senate, here on Saturday. He was the only teacher to be elected from non-government colleges in Ludhiana district.

CMC staff threaten stir

Ludhiana, September 25
Barely a week after the resolution of the crisis in the Hero DMC Heart Centre, employees of the Christian Medical College (CMC) today threatened to go on a strike in case their demands were not met. The employees were scheduled to stage a demonstration today. However, the plan was later cancelled following a meeting with the Director, Dr Silas Charles, to sort out the issue. The negotiations were going on between the management and the employees till the filing of this report.

The employees are demanding medical facility along with tests like CT scan and also medicines free of cost from the hospital. At present the employees are being provided medicines on discount. They are also demanding an increase in DA.

The employees are demanding the appointment of a regular director in the hospital. They maintain that Dr Charles mostly stays in the USA, where he owns a chain of hospitals. However, most of the faculty maintains that it is because of the efforts of people like Dr Charles the CMC have been able to function properly.

Kila Raipur eves win hockey title

Ludhiana, September 25
Mandeep Kaur struck twice as the team of Nankana Sahib Public School of Kila Raipur outplayed Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, team 2-0 to emerge as champions in the junior section of the Ludhiana District Ranjodh Kaur Grewal Memorial Hockey Tournament organised by the Ludhiana District Women Hockey Association at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

The final match witnessed some fine stick work by the players of both the teams. Mandeep drew the first blood in the 27th minute when she received a parallel pass at the top of the striking circle and rolled the ball into the net.

After changing ends, both the teams weaved some good moves but could not translate the chances into the goal. However, midway through the midhalf of the second session, Mandeep Kaur again found the target to consolidate the lead 2-0. Local eves made frantic attacks but fumbled at the last hurdle. Kila Raipur girls clinched the issue 2-0.

In the senior section, Government College Club, Ludhiana, beat Khalsa College Club 2-0 to lift the title. Government College Club players went into the lead in the very second minute of the title clash when Mamta Sharma converted a penalty corner.

Kamaldeep Kaur of Government College Club scored a fine field goal in the 59th minute to seal her opponents' fate and helped the team to wrap up the issue 2-0.

In the match to decide the third and fourth positions, Manpreet Kaur scored a hat-trick to enable the Guru Nanak Model High School, Doraha, team blank the team of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar Chowk 3-0. Manpreet sounded the board in the 4th, 13th and 27th minute of the match.

Arjuna awardee (basketball) Sajjan Singh Cheema presided over the concluding function and distributed the prizes. Ms Surinder Dhir, former Deputy Director Sports Punjab, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, Hardeep Singh Grewal, former Olympian, Mr Jagbir Singh Grewal, Mr Manmohan Mishra, officials of the Punjab Sports Department, Ludhiana were also present at the prize distribution function.

Softball tourney

The two-day Punjab State Sub-Junior Softball Championship for boys and girls will be held here at the Ramgarhia Educational Complex, Miller Ganj on October 2 and 3, according to Mr P.N Passi, secretary, Punjab Softball Association. Players born on or after January 1, 1990 are eligible to take part in this meet. Players wanting to take part in the meet have been asked to bring their age-proof certificates with them.

Cricket match

A cricket match between Punjab and Delhi teams comprising visullay impaired players will be played at Sarpanch Bachan Singh Cricket Academy ground, Ballokey village near the Dairy Complex on the Hambran Road near here on September 26, according to Mr Ankit Kapoor, president of the Visually Impaired Sports and Welfare Association.

Players to be honoured

The Youngsters Hockey Revival Club of Ludhiana will organise a function on September 27 here at the Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar at 4 pm where the budding hockey players will be honoured.

According to Prof Kamaljit Singh, secretary of the club, 16 players who took part in the K.D Singh Babu Memorial Hockey Tournament (u-14) held at Lucknow last year would be felicitated on the occasion. Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, will be the chief guest while Sister Sobel and Father Davis of the host school would be the guests of honour.

The club will also hold a meeting there to chalk out the future plan for the betterment of the game at school level and finalise the programme to conduct coaching camps and under-14 tournaments during the coming months, Prof Kamaljit added.
