HP policy renders 20,000 jobless Palampur, September 25 Moreover, the state government has completely stopped mining in small units of the state. The worst affected is slate mining at Ghaniara in Kangra district, in which over 20,000 persons were employed. The Ghaniara panchayat was looking after the management of these slate mines. It had been earning money by way of royalty from the sale of slate. There are over 500 pits at Ghaniara and Yol camp, where slates were being extracted were being supplied to Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. The panchayat here had employed over 50 supervisors to inspect the mines and collect royalty. Besides, 200 trucks and 2,500 mules were also engaged in this trade. Despite the fact that the mining activities here were being carried out manually and no heavy machinery was being used, the government preferred to go ahead with its decision and did not bother to seek the advise of experts in this regard. Before taking this major decision the government had never taken the panchayats or the owners of the mines into confidence. These persons, who were solely dependant on this trade, are now virtually finding it hard to make both ends meet. The non-cooperative attitude of the state government towards those affected has also drawn flak from locals. Despite repeated requests the government had not initiated measures for the rehabilitation of the over 20,000 persons. |
