HP policy renders 20,000 jobless
Our Correspondent

Palampur, September 25
Resentment is brewing up in Kangra district against the mining policy of the Himachal Pradesh Government as it has rendered thousand of persons, including mule owners, truck, tempo and tractor-trailer owners jobless here. It is being alleged that big industrial houses like Gujarat Ambuja Cement Limited and ACC are b eing allowed to extract limestone and other raw material on a largescale for its cement plants and to export it to other states.

Moreover, the state government has completely stopped mining in small units of the state. The worst affected is slate mining at Ghaniara in Kangra district, in which over 20,000 persons were employed.

The Ghaniara panchayat was looking after the management of these slate mines. It had been earning money by way of royalty from the sale of slate.

There are over 500 pits at Ghaniara and Yol camp, where slates were being extracted were being supplied to Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. The panchayat here had employed over 50 supervisors to inspect the mines and collect royalty. Besides, 200 trucks and 2,500 mules were also engaged in this trade.

Despite the fact that the mining activities here were being carried out manually and no heavy machinery was being used, the government preferred to go ahead with its decision and did not bother to seek the advise of experts in this regard.

Before taking this major decision the government had never taken the panchayats or the owners of the mines into confidence.

These persons, who were solely dependant on this trade, are now virtually finding it hard to make both ends meet.

The non-cooperative attitude of the state government towards those affected has also drawn flak from locals. Despite repeated requests the government had not initiated measures for the rehabilitation of the over 20,000 persons.

Shimla, September 25
A senior official from the Swedish Embassy, Mr Julius Morgan, will arrive here tomorrow to take custody of the body of Swede trekker Margot Lydia Aulikki Ryyananen.

The body was retrieved from the Kangla Jot glacier after a span of 22 years.

Police sources said since the body of Margot, which has been kept at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) for the past 10 days, had started to decompose, the Swedish Embassy had been asked to take possession of it.

After the IGMC authorities asked the police to remove the body from the hospital, the SP (CID), Mr B.M. Sharma, yesterday spoke to the Senior Administrative Officer in the Swedish Embassy to either collect the body or direct the police on the future of the body.

Though the body is likely to be cremated here, a decision in this regard will be taken by the embassy official after he reaches here.
