Court orders to do away with ‘valid till marriage’ stamps Jammu, September 24 The directions were issued by a two-member Bench, consisting of Mr Justice V.K. Jhanji and Mr Justice Y.P. Nargotra on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Prof Hari Om, vice-president of the BJP. The court ordered that the endorsement of “valid till marriage” should not be made on the state subjects being issued to unmarried girls. The full Bench, the court observed, has since struck down the practice of such endorsement. Prof Hari Om had in his PIL pointed out that the Deputy Commissioners were violating the orders of the court by making such endorsements and thereby not giving equal treatment to women in the state. The certificates issued even after the orders of the court bore such endorsement. He told mediapersons today that the irony was that despite Ms Sonia Gandhi and Ms Mehbooba Mufti, heading the Congress and the PDP respectively, girls were being discriminated against men in the state. He alleged that to nullify the October 7, 2002 judgement of the court that struck down unequal treatment to women, the Congress-PDP coalition government brought the Daughters’ Bill in the Assembly. The Congress members in the Assembly voted in favour of the bill that was not put to voting in the legislative council by the Chairman. Prof Hari Om said the Congress was in the forefront to get the bill passed as the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, himself chaired the meeting to bring consensus among all parties for the smooth passage of the bill in the Assembly. However, the Congress somersaulted on the issue when a countrywide hue and cry was made against the bill. |
