In the first incident of poll-related violence in the run up to the elections of the Panjab University Students’ Council, the presidential candidate of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Gurparvez Singh Sandhu ‘Shellay’, was attacked with swords outside Government College, Sector 11, here today.

‘Indirect tax disputes can be settled within one year’

The Customs and Central Excise Settlement Commission endeavours to settle indirect tax disputes placed before it within six months to a year, with timeframes fixed for each stage of the disposal, thereby saving time and effort both for the litigant and the department, said Mr N. Rajagopalan, Chairman, Settlement Commission (Customs and Central Excise), in Chandigarh today.

P OLLING in the graduate constituency of the Senate may have been a lacklustre affair, given the low voter turnout during elections. However, to make up for the lack of enthusiasm among voters, the supporters more than made up for it. They lent a festive air to the booths, putting up posters of their candidates in their tents and distributing pamphlets and cards. They were there from the beginning of the election to its very end, approaching voters and asking for votes, untiringly, despite the hot weather conditions.

7-day remand for 3 accused

Panchkula, September 20
The kidnapping and murder of industrialist Rajan Bhuchar would have remained untraced had it not been for the prompt action by the police. Within two hours of being informed of the kidnapping, and engaging the accused in conversation for over 15 minutes while he made a call demanding ransom of Rs 25 lakh, a police team traced and prime accused Mohinder Singh to the PCO from where he was making the call.

Case against Kohli’s brother adjourned
Mohali, September 20
Proceedings on the plea to discharge Amritpal Singh, brother of Maninderpal Singh Kohli, the suspect in the alleged rape and murder of British school girl Hannah Foster in March, last year, in Britain, was adjourned for September 22 by a local court as the investigating officer (IO) could not be examined.

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, in girls section and Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, in boys won the Six-a-side Football Tournament for St Xavier’s Trophy played here today at the St Xavier’s School, Sector 44. While in the girls section, GMSSS-35 downed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, Sanjay Public School defeated St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44.
