Flesh trade racket busted, 10 held

The anti-extremist cell, along with the security branch and the local police, conducted an unusual and dramatic raid here this evening. The raid, the police claimed, led to the busting of a vice ring that had been operating in Panchkula, Chandigarh and Parwanoo.

Driver’s body found by the roadside

A taxi driver, who was reportedly abducted and his Tata Qualis taken away by two unidentified youths from a local taxi stand, was found shot dead along the Ambala-Pehowa road in Jansui village, near Ambala, this morning.

Hotelier commits suicide
Panchkula, September 14
Dejected by his wife’s betrayal of faith, a 45-year-old hotelier, Pawan Kumar, committed suicide by hanging himself at his Sector 4 house this evening.

A special team of the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Vijay Kumar Bhalla, who was wanted in a bank fraud case for the past 17 years, here yesterday, according to the CBI.

One killed in road accident
Panchkula, September 14
A 24-year-old man, Mukesh Kumar, was killed while his friend, Pawan Kumar, was seriously injured when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a tipper from behind. The two friends were reportedly going from Nahan to Nalagarh when the accident took place. While Pawan was driving, Mukesh was pillion-riding. The errant driver, however, managed to escape.

Hostelers allege harassment by warden
Chandigarh, September 14
Inmates of Aravali Hostel in Punjab Engineering College today alleged that the Warden of the hostel, Dr S.K Mangal, was harassing them by levying undue fines on them. Students told mediapersons that without giving a warning about the items or gadgets lying in their rooms, the Warden was levying fine on them. The fine varied between Rs 500 and Rs 1500.

PEC research scholar honoured

The Mother Teresa Education Trust, Chandigarh, has honoured a Chandigarh youth, Sunil Kumar, a research scholar of Punjab Engineering College, who has stood fourth in the Harvard Scientistica-2004 group at Harvard University in a project research work on rocket propulsion. In this competition, 605 research scholars from different universities of the world took part.

Delhi band Perestroika has won the first nationwide collegiate music competition ‘Campus Rock Idols’. The September 12 finale of the contest, which saw the selection of Chandigarh’s DAV College rock band at the regional level, witnessed a crowd of over 1,000 youth.

A regional level cricket meet for under-16 boys and a kabaddi meet for under-19 boys of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chandigarh Region, began today at Kendriya Vidyalaya AFS, High Grounds, Chandigarh. As many as 170 students representing 11 clusters from Kendriya Vidyalayas in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Chandigarh will play 15 matches each in cricket and kabaddi on league-cum-knockout basis.
