Govt to continue river-linking project: Dasmunshi
New Delhi, September 14 Talking to mediapersons after a meeting with the all-party delegation of West Bengal regarding the problems concerning irrigation and desilting in the state, Mr Dasmunshi said the work on the linking of rivers in the peninsular region would begin first and a decision on the Himalayan component of the river-linking scheme would be taken up later. He claimed that the river-linking project was a scheme of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and it was she who had set up the National Water Development Authority in 1982 for achieving the purpose. The government was expecting the feasibility reports by December 2005, he added. The minister said there were so many hurdles like the environment and rehabilitation, which had to be considered before the decision was taken on the river-linking schemes. The consultations of the states were an important step because the concurrence of the states was an important process for taking the decision, he said. On the ongoing talks on the sharing of the Teesta waters between India and Bangladesh in Dhaka, he said the technical experts were seized of the issue. “We have good relationship with Bangladesh and there should be no problem in sharing the waters,” he said. He also downplayed the fears expressed by Bangladesh for the river-linking project. He said the Task Force appointed by the previous NDA government had submitted its report and the government would consider it. About the problems raised by the Bengal delegation, he said the Centre would give all necessary help and support. But the state government also should come out with its proposals, he added. The delegation was led by West Bengal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Excise Prabod Chandra Singh. |

New Delhi, September 14 The party has decided to have a fortnight-long rath yatra of top state leaders, beginning from October 2, from four corners of the state led by Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda, senior leaders Babulal Marandi, Karia Munda and Yashwant Sinha, sources said. During the yatra, the state leaders, besides highlighting the developmental work initiated by the BJP-led government in the state in the past
five years, will take up the issues of spiralling inflation, step-motherly treatment to the state by Congress-led UPA
government at the Centre, religious conversions, reservation of jobs on religious basis
introduced in some Congress-led states. “The yatra will not only charge up the party cadre, but also project unity among the party leadership,” senior BJP leader and in charge of Jharkhand Rajnath
Singh told The Tribune here. Mr Rajnath Singh, who as in charge of Chhattisgarh guided the party to a thumping victory in the Assembly polls there last year, said, “The party is giving maximum thrust to a united fight and equal place for all state leadership to steer the party to great success.” “Our purpose is to reach out to the people in every nook and corner of the state well in advance and inform them about the party’s commitment to development and also inform them about
various projects already implemented by the BJP-led government,” Mr Singh said. |

BJP calls Laloo joker in Cong circus
New Delhi, September 14 “In a bid to cover up his sins committed in Bihar during the past 15 years of the RJD rule, Mr Yadav has resorted to making condemnable and baseless charges against senior NDA leaders, including Mr Advani, which will not be tolerated by us,” BJP vice-president and spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told newspersons here. Reacting sharply to Mr Yadav’s allegations, quoting a Time magazine report that Mr Advani was involved in the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya, Mr Naqvi distributed photocopies of the said news report and said, “There was no such mention in the report.” He also dismissed Mr Yadav’s claims that Mr Advani had been accused of any conspiracy to assassinate Mohammad Ali Jinnah and that Pakistan had declared him “absconder”. Mr Naqvi circulated a news report of March 6, 2002, quoting the then Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Jehangir Ashraf Qazi, in which he had denied any such case. “He has launched a sustained campaign to create confusion to divert attention from his misdeeds,” Mr Naqvi said, adding that this had necessitated the issuance of a rejoinder by his party. |

Lodha told to submit original will in 10 days
Kolkata, September 14 Justice Kalyanjyoti Sengupta passed the order after hearing the submissions from Lodha’s counsel Anindya Mitra with regard to the anomalies pointed by the Testamentary Department in the probate application for legal authentication of the same will. Earlier, a copy of an unregistered deed of the will was submitted to the court, which later came to the court’s notice after verification. The court, however, did not take up other anomalies in the Lodha’s probate application, which would be considered when it would decide whether the application was maintainable. One important anomaly in Lodha’s application, as pointed out by the Testamentary Department, was that it has not been verified by any of the three witnesses of the will. The Court had earlier taken a note of the anomalies in the Lodha’s probate application mainly after he sought dismissal of probate application of Birlas for legal authentication of purported mutual wills of M P Birla and Priyamvada Birla on the ground that they had not submitted the originals. Probate applications for both disputed wills are pending before the court. The shareholders of the Birla Corporation demanded that R.S.Lodha be removed from the board of directors since they had lost all confidence in him as co-chairman of the board. Instead they demanded that an administrator be appointed to look after the corporation. Accordingly, a majority of the shareholders sent a joint petition duly signed to the Company Law Board. |
