Two injured in fire incident
Ludhiana, September 5
Two persons sustained serious burn injuries after their room caught fire due to an LPG leakage in Kutcha No. 16 in Field Ganj area here today. Sukh Dass Sharma (35) and Ram Dulare (16), both migrants, got 30 per cent burns in the incident. Hearing the blast , the neighbours came to their rescue and put off the fire within minutes.

3 teachers honoured
Ludhiana, September 5
It was a day of honour for three teachers, Mr Jagdev Singh, a mathematics teacher of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Panjab Agricultural University, Mr Santokh Singh Gill, officiating Principal, Government Senior Secondary School, Dadhaoor, and Ms Harpal Kaur, Principal, Government High School, Karamsar, who were given a shawl, a cheque for Rs 10,000 and a certificate for being the best teachers of the state for 2003.

Man killed over Rs 5!
Ludhiana, September 5
The police today registered a case of murder against a contractor of a liquor vend and his gunman in connection with a shooting incident that took place on Friday. The Division No. 7 police booked Vinay Mishra, contractor of a liquor vend, and his gunman, Harbans Singh, for allegedly killing Rajinder Singh.

Punjab has received 26 mm of rainfall against a normal of 376 mm from June 1 to August 25, showing an overall deficit of 31 per cent. Rainfall was scanty in five districts, deficient in seven districts, normal in three districts and excess in one district.

Mr Gurmel Singh Chandhar, state president, SCBC Mulazim Coordination Committee, and Mr Darshan Singh Ballowal, state organising secretary, SCBC Teachers Union, said here today that a large number of activists of various employees' unions had attended corner meetings organised by local leaders of respective areas to create awareness among dalits on their rights.

BJP activists held in assault case

The Focal Point police yesterday arrested Ram Singh, a prominent BJP worker of Dhandari Kalan, and six of his unidentified colleagues and registered a case against them under Sections 452, 323, 506, 427, 148 and 149 of the IPC.

3 booked for not disclosing tenants’ particulars
Ludhiana, September 5
Three more cases under Section 188 of the IPC were registered at various police stations of the city yesterday against persons who did not inform the police about their servants and tenants as required by a recent order of the district magistrate to do so.

Traders resolve to oppose VAT 
Ludhiana, September 5 The Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal today reiterated its resolve to oppose the introduction of 'fractured' value added tax (VAT) from April 2005 and asked the government to bring in necessary amendments in the legislation and at the same time abolish all other taxes and levies.
