Change lifestyle for cardiac health, say experts
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 5
The US National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Washington, has identified Fortis hospital at Mohali as a nodal centre for clinical trial called STICH (Surgical Treatment of Ischaemic Heart Failure).

Dr Achintya Moulick, Chairman — Cardiovascular Sciences of the hospital restated this at a meeting of the Indian Medical Association here today. Over 150 doctors of the region attended the meeting.

The US National Institute of Health according to Dr Moulick, has recognised, the magnitude of heart failures in the world and specially in India. World-wide, there are almost 22 million heart failure cases and every year another two million new cases are added to this already frightening figure. The best option for heart failure patients is cardiac transplant. However, limitations are due to paucity of donor hearts and ethical issues. In the USA, more than 2,500 heart transplants are done annually whereas the corresponding figures in India for 2003-04 was between 25-30.

Cardiac remodeling has emerged as most accepted surgical alternative to heart transplant in which the shape of the heart is restored to elliptical. “We have been implementing an advanced heart failure programme at our hospital”, Dr Moulick says.

On “Present day lifestyle and heart diseases” Dr Rakesh K. Jaswal, a Senior Cardiologist said, “There is a great need of lifestyle management to combat the growing danger of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Smoking and dyslipidemia are two major culprits contributing to the alarming growth of CAD in India. We need to pay greater stress on the need for exercise. The most important exercises for the heart are aerobic exercises like walking, jogging, running, swimming, dancing and cycling.”
