New Public School basketball champs

Chandigarh, August 31
New Public School, Sector 18, beat IS Dev Samaj School, Sector 21, by 38-18 here today to claim the girls title in the fifth Pandit Mohan Lal Memorial Basketball Tournament. The half-time score was 24-4 in favour of the winners. Gurjeet (16), Sonika (7), Sanchi(6) and Pinky (4) were the main scorers.

In the boys category, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, beat hosts PML SD Public School, Sector 32, by a score of 57-44 to claim the title. Dilawar (18), Sukhpal (16) and Supreet (8) were the principal scorers.

Earlier, in the semi-final matches DAV School, Sector 8, beat New Public School, Sector 18, by 55-51. The half-time score was 28-17 in favour of the winners. PML SD Public School, Sector 32, beat Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, by 63-39 in the other semi- final match.

The half-time score was 35-16. For the winners Manpreeet (20), Ravinder (10), Vikram 98) and Binney (8) excelled.

Cross-country meet

DAV College, Chandigarh, has won the Panjab University Cross-Country Championship for Men for the 2004-05 session. SGGS College, Chandigarh, SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, and AS College, Khanna, secured second, third and fourth positions, respectively.

The DAV College team comprised Vikas Kumar, Hans Raj, Kulwinder Singh, Rajeev Kumar, Hardeep Singh, Kamaljit Singh, Jagtar Singh, Indermohan Singh and Harish Singh.

In the individual category, Vikas Kumar of DAV College, Chandigarh, stood first, while Joginder Singh and Bua Singh of SGGS College, Chandigarh, secured second and third positions, respectively.

Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana, won the Panjab University Cross-Country Championship for Women. Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, GGS College for Women, Chandigarh, and SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, were placed second, third and fourth, respectively.

The Ramgarhia Girls College team comprised Jatinder Kaur, Ramandeep Kaur, Navpreet Kaur, Rajwinder Kaur and Inderjit Kaur.

In the individual category, Iqbal Kaur of GGS College for Women, Chandigarh, stood first, Lakhvir Kaur of GTB Khalsa College for Women, Dasuya, was second, and Veena Yadav of GGS College for Women, Chandigarh, third.

Ball b’minton meet

Boys of GMHS, Sector 36, and St Joseph’s Coaching Centre, Sector 44, entered the semifinals of the 8th Chandigarh Junior State Ball Badminton Championship at Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-D.

In the girls’ section, St Joseph’s Coaching Centre, Sector 44, and ISDSSS, Sector 21, reached the semifinals. GMHS, Sector 36, will play MMHS, Sector 21, and St Joseph’s School, Sector 44, will clash with GMSSS, Sector 37, in the semifinals tomorrow.

St Joseph’s Centre, Sector 44, will meet St Joseph’s School, Sector 44, and ISDSSS, Sector 21, will play GGSSS, Sector 23, in the girls’ semifinals.

Wushu tourney

The 13th Senior National Wushu Championship for boys and girls is being organised by the Jharkhand Wushu Association under the aegis of the Wushu Association of India from September 1 to 4 at JRD Tata Indoor Stadium, Tata Nagar, Jharkhand.

Vakinder Kumar of SGGS College, Sector 26, will lead the Chandigarh boys team and Sapna of IS Dev Samaj School, Sector 21, will lead the girls team.

The team members are: Sanshou event (boys): Vakinder Kumar, Tejinder Singh, Rakesh, Mansa Ram, Sunil, Sham Sunder, Bhupinder and Chander Bagga.

Sanshou event (girls): Sapna, Vandna, Varkha and Deepshika.

Routine event (men): Harinder, Umesh Singh, Tara Chand and Vikramjit.

Routine event (girls): Rujwana and Ruksana.

Krishan Pradhan will be the team manager.

Badminton championships from Sept 9

Chandigarh, August 31
The Chandigarh State Badminton Championships will be held at the Sector 42 Indoor Badminton Hall from September 9 to 12. Competitions will be held in the under-10, under-13, under-16, and under-19 categories as also senior men and women sections. Competitions for veterans in the 35 plus and 45 plus sections will also be held.

Entries can be submitted to Mr S. Mahajan at the Panjab University badminton hall, the Sector 42 Sports Complex, Home Science College and the Sector 23 badminton hall. Entries close on September 7.

The selection of the Chandigarh squads for the North Zone Inter-State Championships, sub-junior nationals, junior nationals and the senior nationals will be conducted on September 12 after the conclusion of the Chandigarh meet.

Meanwhile, a coaching camp for probables for the North Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships and for the Sub-Junior nationals is being conducted at the Sector 42 badminton hall and the Panjab University badminton hall. The North Zone championships are to be held from September 27 to 29 at Panchkula while the sub-junior nationals will be held in Chandigarh from October 10 to 16.

In the North Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships, Chandigarh men are scheduled to take on Himachal Pradesh in the first round while in the women’s section the Chandigarh team have drawn formidable rivals Delhi in the first round.

In the Narang Cup (boys), Chandigarh will take on Himachal Pradesh in the first round while in the girl’s section Chandigarh will play Delhi in the first round.

Ex-Mayor Gian Chand Gupta resigns

Chandigarh, August 31
Former Mayor and two-time councillor Gian Chand Gupta resigned here today as municipal councillor.

Addressing a press conference after submitting his resignation, Mr Gupta said his recent appointment as an office-bearer of the Haryana BJP was not giving him time for his ward. “I did not want to be unjust to either of the two assignments. So I decided to quit as a councillor.” TNS
