Haryana parties still differ on SYL Rohtak, June 18 So far all major parties — the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Indian National Lok Dal and the Haryana Vikas Party — have only been busy claiming credit for the apex court verdict. None of these has taken any initiative to devise a joint strategy. As against this, political and social groups that have negligible presence in the state, are trying to create awareness on this issue. One such meeting of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, the Samajwadi Party, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Janata Dal (S) was held here today, but their action plan is unlikely to have much impact because of their token presence in the state. Likewise, the Arya Samaj has summoned an all-party meeting here tomorrow on this issue, but major parties are unlikely to be represented. A senior Congress leader when asked whether he had received an invitation for the meeting commented that even if he had, he would not have attended it because the organisers were merely “spent cartridges”. Asked about his party’s plans on the SYL canal issue, he evaded a straight answer and said it would be decided at the right time. INLD leaders, too, were unwilling to say anything on the issue. They merely repeated the party line that since the state Assembly was to meet shortly, the issue would be discussed inside the House in the presence of all parties. “A resolution in the House would counter the Punjab pressure more effectively”, a senior minister said. The lack of political action is worrying the masses. Discussions among villagers in chaupals are veering towards creating a people’s movement on this issue to force the political leadership to come into action. Village elders and youths are now planning to convene panchayats. Inder Singh, a farmer hailing from Madina village, near here, says he is in touch with his friends, relatives and sarpanches known to him for seeking their cooperation in this venture. He believes that a people’s movement on this crucial issue will serve the interests of the state better. Though he says given a choice he will like to keep politicians out, he agrees that a mass movement may not be possible without them. However, he says, he has no idea of how to bring leaders of different parties together. Similarly, Balwan Sharma of Balak village in Hisar district is engaged in a similar exercise. He plans to tour the southern districts of Haryana next week to try to rope in his classmates and other friends because those districts stand to gain the most from the canal should it become a reality. The emergence of such ginger groups is a relatively new phenomenon in the state. A senior politician, now retired, describes this as a “great new beginning”. He says alternative leadership always emerges from such movements. |
Resolution on
SYL soon, says Chautala Chandigarh, June 18 The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, said here today that a resolution would be moved in the House to build pressure on the Centre to implement the Supreme Court judgement on the canal expeditiously. He expressed the hope that the resolution would be adopted by the House unanimously. The officiating Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, has already stated that his party would bring an adjournment motion on the SYL canal as well as move a resolution for its earlier completion in Punjab. Earlier the Congress MPs from Haryana had met the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan
Singh, and the AICC President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, to impress upon them the need for early implementation of the Supreme Court judgement. They told the senior leaders that need to complete the canal had assumed added importance because of the Assembly elections due within months. |
Parties form panel for completion
of canal Rohtak, June 18 These are the Rashtriya Lok Dal, Janata Dal (S), Samata Party, Samajwadi Party, Nationalist Congress Party and the Berozgaar Sangathan. The leaders of these parties met here and set up the Haryana SYL Sangharsh Samiti. The meeting decided to launch a state wide mass contact programme to mobilise public opinion which would end on July 15. Thereafter, the Samiti would take out padyatras from two points in Haryana to Delhi. One padyatra, led by Mr Zora Singh of
JD (S), would commence from Jind and the other from Meham in this district would be led by Mr Bharpur Singh of the RLD. At the end of the padyatra, a memorandum would be presented to the President. Those who attended the meeting included Mr Bharpur Singh Jakhar, Mr Sham Sunder Pasrija, Mr Shishpal Beniwal, Ms Kanta Alaria and Mr Deepak Rathi. The meeting criticised the three “Lals” of Haryana politics for not doing enough to get the SYL project completed. It said they had only exploited the issue for political mileage. |
Cong encouraging defections: Chautala Chandigarh, June 18 In a statement here today, Mr Chautala criticised the Congress for encouraging defections in the state and claimed that after assuming the office of Chief Minister, he had wiped out the “stigma of ‘Aya Ram, Gaya Ram” from the face of the state”. Mr Chautala added that after assuming the office of Chief Minister in 1999 he got the elections to the State Assembly conducted before time and not only obtained a fresh mandate from the people, but also denied the party ticket to those who had defected to the INLD from other parties. However, Mr Chautala’s statement about not giving the party ticket to defectors is not wholly correct. He did give the ticket to Mr Kartar Singh Bhadana, an HVP legislator, who played a key role in splitting the party resulting into the collapse of the Bansi Lal Government. Mr Bhadana subsequently became the Cooperative Minister in the Chautala regime. He recently joined the BJP and fought the Lok Sabha elections from Rajasthan as a candidate of the saffron party. Mr Chautala made this statement as eight Independent MLAs of Haryana recently withdrew their support to the INLD and joined hands with the Congress. |
