A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court headed by Mr Chief Justice B.K. Roy today ordered that a special bhog ceremony be held in the gurdwara inside the Burail Jail in the memory of the mother of an accused in the Beant Singh murder case.

Taking up a petition filed by Lakhwinder Singh, an undertrial in the Beant Singh assassination, the Bench ordered that a maximum of five members of his family be allowed to participate in the ceremony. Lakhwinder had prayed that police security be given to him to attend bhog of his mother on May 15.

The petitioner had stated that his application for interim bail to attend the last rites of his mother, who died in the PGI recently, was dismissed by the trial court. He has also claimed that the trial court had unnecessarily disallowed his application for interim bail on the ground that he could also escape like the three other killers of suspected Beant Singh.

He had cited the case of Jagtar Singh Tara, who was allowed to attend the last rites of his brother at his native village. After hearing the counsel for the petitioner and the CBI, the Bench ordered that the special bhog ceremony be held on May 23.
