Free lung check-up camp held on World Asthma Day
Our Correspondent

Noida, May 5
“The prevalence of asthma has increased by two times in the past two decades in India. There are 20 million asthmatics in India as per the WHO report.

“Asthma can be controlled and a patient’s life can be restored to normalcy with minimum medical treatment if it is given in consonance with the scientific evidence of lung involvement in such patients”, said Dr Deepak Talwar, Chairman, Metro Centre of Respiratory Diseases, on the occasion of World Asthma Day today.

A free lung check-up camp with emphasis on healthy and normal lungs for everyone was organised at Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida, today.

Metro has been doing free lung function test which is a test for not only diagnosing bronchial asthma but also assessing its severity and control of disease. “We have performed free lung function test for more than 2000 persons at such camps organised in the past five years. The treatment of asthma is done in partnership with patients and caregivers”.

The self-assessment plan of asthma, which is practiced all over the world but is not existent in our country at all, has been emphasised on this World Asthma Day by Metro Centre for Respiratory Diseases.

Patients attending the camp today were provided with written self-management plan.

Dr Talwar had started educating people about inhalers, peak flow meters, monitoring, nebulisation, relievers vs prevention drugs, diet and exercise to patients of asthma in the last few years. There can be no capsule of 16 weeks’ programme as the disease cannot be cured in 16 weeks. People are misguided that a fish taken once a year for three years can cure asthma. Such kind of misdirected information and media generated publicity can only worsen the situation where ignorance, misery and misconceptions are the rule, emphasised Dr Talwar.

Our aim is to let every asthmatic not only breath normally but also live normally without causing any harm, said Dr Talwar. The Metro Breath Easy programme which has been under way during the past five years is based on scientific knowledge, extensive work up of the patients and expert patient-education based on evidence-based medicine existing worldwide.

On the occasion, Dr Purshotam Lal, Chairman, Metro Hospital, said implementing such socio- educational activities in Noida had brought about a significant change in favour of asthmatic patients so much so that the admission rate of such patients with acute respiratory problems had decreased by nearly 70 per cent. Emergency room visit also had come down by nearly 64 per cent, he added.
