US Ambassador visits PAU
Ludhiana, April 16
The US Ambassador to India, Mr David C. Mulford, visited Punjab Agricultural University last night and held a meeting with Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, at Sukhdev Singh Bhavan. Various agricultural issues were discussed with senior officials of the university.

Patwaris to go on protest leave

To protest in favour of long-pending demands, the patwaris of Ludhiana district will go on 10-day mass leave from April 27 onwards. They will also hold a rally outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office on April 26.

Election process begins

Deputy Commissioner-cum-Returning Officer Anurag Verma today formally set in motion the election process for the Ludhiana Parliamentary constituency by issuing a public notice for the poll.

Steel regulatory commission sought
Ludhiana, April 16
The Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry has suggested to set up an iron and steel regulatory commission to monitor the prices of steel in the country. The chamber pointed out, apart from steep hike in steel prices a new pattern has emerged. Prices change several times a day with a heavy difference. This volatility has ruined the steel consuming industrial units. Factors of production do not change so often, but the prices change on trading sentiments. This will ruin the steel using industry, it asserted.

AEPC expects apparel market to grow
Ludhiana, April 16
The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) is geared up to face the open regime that comes into effect from January 2005. After the opening up of the world markets, the council also expects the apparel market in the country to grow substantially.

PNB’s Punjab zone net profit up by 22 pc
Ludhiana, April 16
Punjab National Bank(Punjab zone) earned a net profit of Rs 562 crore (pre-audited) as on March 31, 2004, as compared to Rs 462 crore in the corresponding period last year, thus registering an year-on-year growth of 22 per cent. This was stated by Mr U.S. Bhargava General Manager, Punjab zone, while addressing a press conference here today.

UTI opens branches in 3 villages
Ludhiana, April 16

CICU chief to run for another term

A number of organisations affiliated to the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU) have decided to field the incumbent president, Mr Inderjit Singh Pradhan, again for the post of the president. Riding high over captain Gagandeep Dhand’s superb batting (82 n.o.) and equally notable contributions from the latter half, the Ludhiana team performed well on the opening day of the two-day match against Jalandhar in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (u-15) for the Sushil Bali Trophy at the Burlton Park ground, Jalandhar. At stumps, the hosts were tottering at 12 for 2 in reply to Ludhiana’s big score of 299 for 9.
