Genesis - 2004 begins

Ludhiana, April 16
Genesis-2004, a three-day inter-college cultural festival, began at Guru Nanak Engineering College, Gill Road, here today.
The inauguration function began with an address of Mr M.S. Grewal, Registrar, Punjab Technical University, who emphasised on the need to integrate modern technology in imparting education. Dr P.N. Razdan, advisor, All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), wished the college the very best in its efforts to earn accreditation. Dr R.P. Singh, Principal of the host college, thanked guests for paying a visit.

Prof Kanwaljit Singh, convener, said 15 teams from north India reported for the events and about 10 more would be joining tomorrow. In extempore competition, Jaspreet Singh of the host college clinched the first prize. Rustom of the same college was declared second and Digvijay of the AIET, Faridabad, won the third prize.

In paper presentation, Abhinav and Sudeepjit of the DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology (DAVIET), Jalandhar, won the first prize. Raj Kamal and Mandeep of Guru Nanak Engineering College (GNEC), Ludhiana, were declared second. In on-the-spot programming, Sachin and Honey of the DAVIET stood first, followed by Sapna and Gaurav of the Punjab College of Engineering and Technology (PCET), Lalroo, and Dilpreet and Pawan from the GNEC.

In skit, the two teams of the GNEC were declared first and third while second prize went to the CEMK. In volte face, Varun of DAV and Rustom of the GNEC were declared first, Sandeep of the AIET, Faridkot, was declared second and Pradeep of the GNEC stood third. In cartooning, Jatinderpal Singh of Guru Gobind Singh College (GGS), Saurabh Bhandari of the GNEC and Kunal Garg of the GNEC were declared first, second and third, respectively. In collage making, Sonia Saini and Jagjit Singh of the AIET, Faridkot, Karan Likhi and Harmandeep Singh of the GNEC and PG Singh and Nitin Lamba of the AIET, Faridkot, were declared third.

BCM toppers honoured

Ludhiana, April 16
To honour its toppers who had done well in various academic and co-curricular activities, BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, organised an annual prize distribution function at Swami Dayanand Hall, here today.

Ms Sudha Sharma, Chief Commissioner, Income Tax, was the chief guest. After inspecting the guard of honour, she saw the programme which represented a combination of expression, coordination, talent and beauty. The programme started with the lighting of lamp and a welcome address by the Principal.

Over 125 outstanding students from various categories, including academics, sports and NCC received prizes in the form of certificates and trophies. The audience enjoyed a variety of entertainment programmes of dance and music by students. On the occasion, Ms Sudha Sharma, chief guest, congratulated the winners on their achievements.

The grand finale was dandiya, a folk dance from Gujarat, which sparked senses and charged the atmosphere as the performers made everyone clap and tap to their synchronised and well-coordinated dance movements. Mr Satyanand Munjal, president, Managing Committee, presented a vote of thanks.

Lecture on insurance sector

Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujjarkhan campus, Model Town, organised a lecture on ‘Career opportunities in insurance sector’ here today.

The guest speaker on the occasion was Mr Dalbir Singh Bedi, Sales Manager, AVIVA Insurance Co. India Pvt. Ltd. He said that the insurance sector was fast emerging as a lucrative avenue for employment in today’s market. Students of MBA, BBA and BCA attended the interactive seminar which helped them develop an insight into the employment opportunities in the industry.

Mr Dalbir Singh said that insurance was no longer regarded simply as a measure for tax -benefit. Infact, the ostensible utility of insurance was human life. Insurance industry was experiencing a tremendous growth because of its potential for reinforcing life and risk assurance, he said. Mr Dalbir also highlighted the numerous career avenues available in the insurance segment. He explained that various full time as well as part time employment options from which the students could make a choice.

Dr H.S. Singha, officiating director, GNIMT, said that the seminar was part of the ongoing placement drive at the institute for the final year students. The company had short listed a few students for the next round of interview, which would be held on tomorrow.

Tagore, USPC Jain schools win quiz contest

Ludhiana, April 16
Students from five city schools participated in a zonal quiz competition organised at Tagore Public School, Aggar Nagar, by Cremica Foods here yesterday.
Students from Classes V to X participated in the contest, which was organised under two categories. The first category had students from Classes V, VI and VII and the second had students from Classes VIII, IX and X. The participating teams included those from the host school, USPC Jain Senior Secondary School, Sacred Heart School, Jamalpur, Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Udham Singh Nagar, and Atam Public School.

For the students of the junior category, there were three rounds named the highest bidder round, clue round and buzzer round. The senior category also had three rounds: “Health in Your Hands”, “Healthy Brain” and a buzzer round. Mr Aditya Raj Kalia conducted the quiz.

In the first category, the team of Swati, Sahej and Himanshu representing USPC Jain Senior Secondary School won the first prize. The second prize went to the team of Gurkaran, Hargurnad and Gaurav of Tagore Public School.

In the second category, the Tagore Public School team represented by Manish Sharma, Gagan and Sudiksh won the first prize. The second prize went to the team of Sacred Heart School comprising Ankit, Bajinder and Sakshi Joshi. The third prize went to the team of USPC School comprising Shashikant, Avjeet Acharya and Jasmeet Singh.

1,000 students get prizes

Over 1,000 students received prizes at an annual function organised at Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines, here today.
The function was presided over by Ms Neena Khanna, the Principal of the school. After inspecting a guard of honour presented by the Iron Eagle Club, she was accorded a floral welcome by the reception committee. The function began with Saraswati Vandana.

The cultural bonanza that regaled the audience included “Geeton ki Phulwari”, “Promote your Sales”, “Jaadu”, “Mein Vasdi Ujjar Gayee”, a Hindi skit, a Punjabi duet and a choreographic representation. The fancy dress show had students acting like a dancer, a cricket ball, a cigarette, a coolie, a snowman, a peacock, a farmer, a flower seller and Tipu Sultan.
