Life-saving treatment for foetus with irregular heartbeat
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 15
In a landmark development, the medical team at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals provided life saving treatment to the yet-to-be-born child of an eight-month pregnant lady. The complication, diagnosed as Fetal Arrhythmia (Irregular Heartbeat of the Foetus), required administration of medicine/treatment while the child was still in the mother’s womb.

To avert the life-threatening situation, the requisite medicine was passed on to the foetus through the mother’s placenta and was effective in normalizing the heart beat, which was at a high of almost 250/minute, double the normal heart beat of 120- 140/minute).

The mother, 24-year-old Promilla Agarwal of West Delhi, underwent a cardiac evaluation of the foetus after the routine ultrasound suspected a problem of the heart. The evaluation showed an abnormally high heart beat of the foetus and she was referred to Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals where the diagnosis indicated the heartbeat in the upper chambers of the heart to be too fast. An extremely rare condition, this had reduced the contractibility of the heart and the heart was failing.

To control the abnormal heart rate, an immediate treatment plan was formulated to pass on heart related medicines to the foetus through the mother’s placenta.

Digoxin (an effective heart related medicine) was given to the mother at more than the normal dosage under medical supervision of the Fetal Medicine Unit and the Paediatric Cardiology Unit, which was successful in gradually normalising the heart rate. This was confirmed by subsequent evaluation, which showed that the heart rate had decreased and the heart function had returned to normal.

The treatment was administered under the supervision of Dr Vikas Kohli, Senior Consultant, Paediatric Cardiology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, and Dr Anita Kaul, Senior Consultant, Gynaecology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

The complication (Fetal Arrhythmia) is a rare occurrence and there isn’t much conclusive precedence of its successful treatment. The problem can be severe enough to result in heart failure and can even lead to the death of the foetus.

“The case marks a highpoint in the area of Fetal Medicine,” said Ms Anjali Kapoor, Head– International Marketing and Public Relations, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. “If this complication was not treated, it could have been life threatening for the foetus. What helped us was correct diagnosis at the right stage and support from a multi-disciplinary team, which included a Paediatric cardiologist, gynaecologist, and neonatologist.”

Ali Sher knocks out Ashok in SRF Golf
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, April 15
Two-time Indian Open winner Ali Sher held his nerve to knock out top seed Ashok Kumar in the second round of the SRF Matchplay Championship at the Delhi Golf Club course on Thursday. Ali Sher birdied the 18th hole to win the close contest 1-up.

In another major upset, Jumman of Lucknow got the better of Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia of Kolkata 2-1. Shamim Khan of Delhi triumphed over former Indian Open winner Feroz Ali 7 and 5 while last year’s SRF runner-up Rahil Gangjee lost to Asian tour star Amandeep Johl 4 and 3.

The second, third and fourth seeds—Vijay Kumar, Arjun Singh and Mukesh Kumar—registered comfortable wins to move into the third round.

Ali Sher was surprised with his victory over Ashok. Ashok began with back to back birdies to go two-up early on. Ali fought back with pars on the fifth and eighth, but with Ashok paring to win the seventh, the scorecard at the break read one up in the latter’s favour. Ali equalised with a par on the tenth.

A series of tied holes followed till the 17th, with the competition hotting up with both the golfers birdying on the 14th from the bunker.

On the final hole, the aggressive Ashok pulled out a driver in quest of a birdie. This proved fatal as the dangerous Delhi course roughs gobbled up his errant tee shot. The experienced Ali, with a driver-3-wood combination, chipped to five feet and sank the resultant birdie putt to win.

Feroz Ali admitted to have experienced a sudden loss of form as he failed to make the vital pars on Thursday.
