Ludhiana, April 15
Appreciating a rare feat by athlete Amritpal Singh, local industrialist. Vijay Chopra honoured him by presenting a television set at a function here yesterday. Amritpal last month rewrote the thirty-year-old record in long jump during the National Federation Athletics Championship in Delhi. He jumped 8.08 metres, breaking the previous record of 8.07 metres set by T.C. Yohanan at the Teheran Asian Games in 1974.

Addressing the function, Mr S.L. Lotey, District Sports Officer, recalled that Amritpal, hailing from Sangrur, joined the ‘centre of excellence’, an academy run by the Punjab Sports Department here in 1999. He represented the state at a number of tournaments where he performed. Amritpal Singh was recruited to the Punjab police in 2001.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Amritpal Singh said he could not give his best in the recently held SAF Games in Pakistan where he finished third (7.59 metres) since he was suffering from hamstring. He said he was hopeful that soon he would be fit.
