The academy, which has been shifted from New Delhi, became functional today. It will continue to function up to May 24. A group of 20 budding cricketers will be imparted “systematic coaching in a scientific way”, Mr Pandove said.

“Every care will be taken to identify the faults in their techniques by the coaches so that they are rectified at the earliest,” he added.

Provision has been made for yoga classes, lectures on proper diet, recreational facilities, swimming and development of cricket skills by experienced coaches appointed by the National Cricket Academy headed by Sunil Gavaskar at Bangalore, he said.

The trainees had been selected by the junior selection committee of the BCCI on the basis of performance of youngsters in the previous tournaments.

Bhaskar Pillay, Bhupinder Singh Sr and Joginder Puri will impart coaching to the trainees. Ashish Upadhyaya, a BCCI-approved trainer, will be there to assist the youngsters. Arrangements for a dietician and a yoga expert have also been made.

SGFI infighting: Punjab players on losing end
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, April 15
Chandigarh school players might be at an advantage over their Punjab counterparts as far as their representation to various national school games was concerned. Last year, the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) had conducted events in the 49th National School Games in various age groups at different venues. A confusion was created when a parallel group, formed at the behest of C.L. Negi organised its own nationals with handful of teams. However the previous body having P.S. Chhabra as secretary-general was able to hold the nationals with maximum participating teams, which gave it an edge over its rival faction.

City school teams took part in the 49th National school games conducted under the aegis of SGFI led by Satpal as president and P.S. Chhabra as secretary-general. Now with the sports gradation interviews of the respective sports departments likely to be held in a few days for those seeking admission to various professional institutions , so those who had taken part in the nationals having maximum number of teams are bound to be given benefit and preference. In this case, city players will be the beneficiary while it counterpart, Punjab school sportspersons might suffer in certain cases.

Moreover, the remaining events of the 49th edition of the National School Games have also been announced by the SGFI to be held in the second week of May at Kozhikode in various disciplines — volleyball under-19 (boys and girls), hockey (under-17,19 boys and girls), ball badminton (under-19 boys and girls), handball (under-17 boys and girls), and kho-kho (under-17 boys and girls).

If city players were not allowed to take part in the above games, then their career might suffer as for the under-19 age group, this could be the last year.

Mr Chhabra said the elections of the SGFI were held on October 9, 2003 at Delhi with nearly 21 affiliated units marking their presence. Even the Government of India has recognised their body. He alleged that in the so called elections held by rival group on February 25 at Pune, only nine affiliated units were officially present out of more than 35 units. He said even the required quorum could not be completed.

Even the Government of India has recognised their body. He said only last week, he has received the official letter by name from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, where they have asked the SGFI to send the nominees for the Dronacharya and Arjuna Awards for 2003.
