Vajpayee govt ignoring women’s interests: Cong
Tribune News Service

Shimla, April 5
Dr Prabha Thakur, spokesperson of the All-India Congress Committee, has accused the Vajpayee government of ignoring the interests of women and said that the bill to reserve 30 per cent seats in Parliament and state legislatures could not be passed because of its negative attitude.

Addressing a press conference here today, she said that though the Congress President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, had extended unconditional support to the bill, it was not introduced in the House. Under the parliamentary system bills were passed by majority and the members of the BJP and the Congress together constituted a majority.

As such, there was no reason for not bringing it to the House. It only indicated that Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s concern for women’s rights was not genuine. Instead of a facilitator, he became a hurdle in the passage of the bill.

She said the Congress would expose the dual face and double speak of the Prime Minister whose words seldom matched deeds. Until a few days ago he maintained that Mrs Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin was not an issue but yesterday he said it was a major issue. He would term the Godhara incident a national shame one day and defend Mr Narendra Modi and justify the riots on another day.

Dr Thakur alleged that Mr Vajpayee refused to take action against ministers involved in various scams and scandals. She mentioned the Tehelka, cofin, UTI, petrol pump and other alleged scams besides the sell-out of the country’s assets in the name of disinvestment in public sector undertakings in this regard.

Dr Thakur was in the city in connection with a workshop organised to provide training to the media managers of the District Congress Committees.

They would further educate workers at the grassroots regarding election issues. Besides highlighting the achievements of the state they would be armed with facts and figures to counter the NDA campaign.

Sushma against use of derogatory language
Our Correspondent

Dharamsala, April 5
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Sushma Swaraj today said that the issue of foreign origin of Ms Sonia Gandhi was a political one and needed to be raised at all political platforms. Ms Swaraj was talking to mediapersons at Shahpur after launching the campaign of the BJP in Himachal Pradesh.

The Union Minister while criticising those who were using derogatory language against Ms Sonia Gandhi did not spare Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks, which were in bad taste. She said one could be critical without being abusive. Ms Sonia Gandhi was a respectable leader of the Congress but did not deserve to be Prime Minister, as she did not understand India and Indian pschye, Ms Swaraj said.

Replying to questions about the controversy relating to the Vivekanand Medical Trust, of which Mr Shanta Kumar is the chairman, she said the former Union Minister had offered to hand over the land and buildings to the Union Health Ministry so that an AIIMS-type medical institute could be set up at Holta, provided the state government agreed to bear 50 per cent of its running expenses. Mr Shanta Kumar said that he had raised the matter with Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh last year but had not received any reply.

Earlier, addressing a well-attended gathering, the Union Minister detailed the achievements of the Vajpayee government.

The meeting was also addressed by former MPs Mr Suresh Chandel, Mr Maheshwar Singh and Mr Shanta Kumar, who are contesting from Hamirpur, Mandi and Kangra, respectively.

Former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and state BJP president Suresh Bhardwaj also spoke on the occasion.

Cong govt messing up finances, says BJP leader
Tribune News Service

Shimla, April 5
Mr Ganesh Dut, a senior BJP leader, today alleged that the fund-starved Congress government was again messing up the finances of the state by diverting plan funds to meet its day-to-day expenditure.

In a statement here, he said the government was facing a grave financial crisis and it managed to pay salaries by premature encashment of fixed deposits. The Congress that was responsible for the perennial shortage of finances seemed to have not learnt any lesson from its mistakes. It was resorting to the same old practices which ruined the state.

He said the state would have been much better off financially had the Virbhadra Singh government not concealed the actual Budget deficit from the 9th Finance Commission. Subsequently, it raised loans at exorbitantly high rates of interest plunging the state into a debt trap. The situation had come to such a pass that the government was raising new loans to repay the old ones.

First Tibetan passport found

Dharamsala, April 5
The “first Tibetan passport”, claimed to have been prepared 56 years ago at Lhasa and which had been missing for the past 12 years, was found from an antique dealer in Nepal, sources in Tibetan government-in-exile said.

The passport issued by Kaashag (cabinet of Tibet) on 26th day of eighth month of Tibetan year which coincided with October 10, 1947, bore stamps of countries like India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Switzerland and France. Tibetan leaders claim that it was an affirmation of Tibet’s de facto independence and was of immense historical importance for Tibetans.

The recovery of the passport was result of the initiative taken by “friends of Tibet (India)” which was collecting the objects of historical importance belonging to Tibet to showcase them in an exhibition named “Story of a Nation: Independent, Exiled and Occupied Tibet”, they said.

The document was handed over to the Tibetan spiritual and temporal head Dalai Lama on March 29 by the “friends of Tibet” and the Tibetan leader said he was very happy to get back the passport which was of historical importance to the Tibetans.

The passport was held by Tsepon Shakabpa, the author of “Tibet: A Political History”, who was Dalai Lama’s official representative in Delhi till 1966. The passport went missing after his death at Kalimpong in 1992. — PTI
