Contractor puts HSIDC in the soup
Chandigarh, March 15 The contractor employed by the corporation put up a number of hoardings eulogising the achievements of the INLD Government in Ambala district yesterday in clear violation of the directions issued by the Election Commission of India, which has asked the Centre and the states to remove all hoardings. The action of the HSIDC contractor gave the impression that the Haryana Government hears exactly the opposite of what the commission says. The places at which the HSIDC contractor put up the hoardings included Ambala city, which is the seat of the district administration. Sources say about five hoardings were put up in that district yesterday. The Chief Secretary of Haryana, Mr A.N. Mathur, told newsmen at a HUDA function in Panchkula on Saturday that the Election Commission’s directive regarding the hoardings would be implemented in letter and in spirit. Even men of the National Highways Authority of India were seen covering with a cloth the hoardings projecting National Highway No. 1 as a part of the dream project of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Ambala today. Confirming the development a spokesman of the corporation said the contract to put the hoardings was given to a Delhi-based private agency much before the elections were announced. In its anxiety to complete the contract, the agency put up the hoardings in Ambala yesterday. However, the spokesman said, as soon as the Managing Director of the corporation, Dr Harbaksh Singh, came to know of what the agency had done, he immediately ordered it to remove the hoardings by this evening. To be fair to the HSIDC, true to the spokesman’s word, the agency removed the hoardings by 6 p.m. today. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the state government had asked the HSIDC to put up about 125 hoardings at a cost of about Rs 22,000 each. If this is taken as a yardstick, various corporations of the state must have sunk about Rs 4.5 crore in putting up the hoardings which are viewed by the Election Commission as an unfair election practice. |
Cong to prefer
youth as LS candidates
Hisar, March 15 Talking to reporters at Narnaund, about 45 km from here, yesterday, he said the party high command had given the ticket to five office-bearers of the youth wing in its first list of party candidates. He said though the youth wing had not demanded any ticket, the party President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, wanted to give maximum representation to the youth in the country. He hoped that the party would give ticket to more youth. Commenting on the possibility of an alliance between the INLD and the BSP in Haryana, he said both parties had contested elections jointly twice in the past, too, but just after the elections, they parted ways for petty political interests. The people of Haryana would not be misguided this time, he added. Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewala, former president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC), and Dr Ajay Singh Chaudhary, son of senior Congress leader and former Power and Irrigation Minister Virender Singh Narnaundia, also addressed the party workers. |
CM’s criticism of BJP hollow, says Sharma
Rohtak, March 15 Addressing a press conference here, he said the INLD, got the mandate jointly with the BJP. Since the BJP had severed its political ties with the INLD, Mr Chautala should seek a fresh mandate if he wanted to criticise the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. Mr Sharma said Mr Chautala had suddenly become severely critical of the two leaders and the BJP after it chose to go to the polls on its own. He would know where he stood without the BJP if he resigned and contested the Assembly elections without the support of the BJP. |
