NC panel to decide about candidates today

Jammu, March14
The Parliamentary Committee of the National Conference (NC) will meet in Srinagar tomorrow to finalise the list of its candidates. While NC has decided to field candidates from all six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir, the state BJP unit is yet to take a final decision about fielding a candidate from the Ladakh constituency.

BJP sources said, “We had decided to contest all six seats but in case we field a party candidate from Ladakh constituency it will help the National Conference.”

The sources maintained, ‘‘we have suggested to the Leh Hill Development Council that in case it announced its support to the NDA polices the BJP will not field a candidate from the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat.”

As far as Jammu and Udhampur constituencies were concerned the die has been cast in favour of Dr Nirmal Singh, president of the party and Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, Minister of State for Defence, who is going to contest from Udhampur from where he had won earlier also. The BJP has decided to field a Kashmiri Pandit either from Srinagar or from Anantnag constituency.

Even though the National Conference is in the opposition in the state yet a number of ticket seekers were knocking at the doors of the party.

A senior party leader said the panel of names shortlisted by the NC includes the names of Ch.Tali Hussain, members of the dissolved Lok Sabha, Surjit Singh Slathia, a former minister, Mian Altaf, a Gujjar leader and a former minister, Mirza Abdul Rashid and A.R.Bukhari for the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat. Those being considered for the Udhampur-Kathua constituency include Mr Sajjad Kichloo, MLA, Mr Khalid Najib Sohrawardhy, Surjit Singh Slathia, Brij Mohan Sharma and Bharat Bushan.

For the Congress, which has set its eyes on Jammu and Udhampur seats, the selection of candidates has become a difficult task because it may find the challenge from the BJP and the National Conference a tough one.

Though the number of ticket seekers is quite large, which includes former MPs and ministers, the senior Congress functionaries favour Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, Deputy Chief Minister and Mr Lal Singh, Health Minister, as party candidates for Jammu and Udhampur constituencies, respectively.

Congress circles in Jammu have conveyed to the High Command that Mr Mangat Ram may emerge as a dark horse with the possible split of votes between the National Conference and the BJP.

It is not yet known whether the Congress will avoid fielding a candidate from Udhampur constituency in case Prof Bhim Singh stuck to his plan of contesting the poll from this constituency.

Govt, NC played communal card on Bill: Gupta

Jammu, March 14
Union Minister of State for Defence Chaman Lal Gupta today charged leaders of the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir and the National Conference of playing the “communal card” on the issue of the controversial Bill denying property rights to women marrying outsiders.

“The coalition government and the NC had deliberately played a communal card in the shape of the women’s Bill to communalise the situation in Jammu and Kashmir,” Mr Gupta told a public rally in the Londi area of Kathua district.

Mr Gupta, campaigning in the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, asked the Congress to explain to the people why if supported this “malicious move” in the Assembly and what “forced it to change its stance” in the Upper House.

He said as the leaders of this government, as also those of the National Conference, had “utterly failed” to keep their promises in the fields of development and other issues, they were trying to incite “communal passions” on the eve of the Lok Sabha poll to “mislead” the people.

“This is highly dangerous and deplorable as it will encourage fundamentalism and secessionism which have already brought suffering and misery to the people of this state.”

Their stance will create impediments in the efforts being made by the Centre to have peace in the state and with neighbouring Pakistan, he alleged. — PTI

Villagers stand up, refuse to give in to militants

Srinagar, March 14
The courageous response of villagers of Wadwun, a sleepy village in Budgam district, to extortionists, mainly former militants, has given a new ray of hope — of a revulsion against violent methods of militants.

The villagers recently refused to give in to the demands of three extortionists who hurled a grenade to make good their escape after facing stiff resistance.

Five civilians and the gang leader were killed and several injured in the incident on Tuesday night.

The bells are tolling for extortionists, criminals, exploiters and militants whose vested interests coincided to inflict agony on people, a security official said.

Three masked men trapped into the village and began looking for one Ghulam Hassan Dar, working in a project to join the Kashmir valley by rail.

When they reached Dar’s house, the miscreants were in for a surprise.

The family refused to hand over Dar. The three faced stiff resistance they had not bargained for, the official said.

The remarkable courage shown by the Dar family encouraged neighbours to swoop down on the criminals.

Despite being threatened with death with Bilal hurling a grenade, villagers showed there was a limit to their patience vis-a-vis militants which is wearing thin the official said.

“A Ray of hope is there. The militants shall no longer expect walkover in their quest to spread terror,” he said.

The incident has sown the seeds of hope of the common man taking on militants head on the official said. — PTI
