Jalandhar, March 13
The Board of Governors of Punjab Technical University has implemented the 24-credit-rule system for the 2001 batch students of engineering colleges in the state.

A meeting of the Board of Governors, chaired by the Chairman and Punjab Chief Secretary, Mr Jai Singh Gill, at his office in Chandigarh yesterday, finally decided in favour of around 1,400 affected students, who had resorted to agitation to get their demands accepted.

The Vice-Chancellor, Dr S.K. Salwan, said here today that the students of the 2001 batch, who were allowed to register for the 5th semester during August and September, 2003, had been permitted to register for the 6th and subsequent semesters subject to the condition of their fulfilling the attendance criteria for the preceding semesters.

“The students of this batch shall have to pass in all subjects and should fulfil the requirements for B. Tech within six years from the date of admission, Dr Salwan said, adding that the decision stood implemented with immediate effect, for which the Council of Ministers had already given its nod during a meeting on February 2.

Dr Salwan appealed to the parents to ensure that their wards cleared their exams in time for which the engineering colleges concerned were being told to undertake extra classes without charging any fee.
