Chandigarh, January 20
Dense fog continued to disrupt rail and air services in the northwest region for the fourth consecutive day while day temperatures plummeted again by four to seven degrees below normal at most of the places under the cold weather conditions.
The Mumbai-New Delhi-Chandigarh Indian Airlines flight was cancelled due to poor visibility caused by heavy fog while the Jet Airways New Delhi-Chandigarh flight landed here 90 minutes behind schedule.
Most of the trains, especially the long distance ones, ran three to five hours behind schedule. The Howrah-Kalka Mail stayed cancelled today because of abnormally late running of the train. The train from Howrah, which had a normal chugging-in time here of 3.30 am, could reach here more than 18 hours behind schedule at 9 pm. Consequently the return journey from Kalka was delayed by three hours and 45 minutes.
Mandi: As a result of prolonged spell of dry weather and consequent decrease in the discharge of water in perennial rivers, the power generation in hydel projects in this region has decreased.
The power generation in the 110-MW Shanan Hydro-Electric Project is the worst effected. Here the power generation is wavering between 14 MW and 25 MW due to negligible rain and snowfall in the catchment area, as a result of which the discharge in the Uhl river has decreased.
The condition is equally worse in the 60 MW Bassi power house, for which the tail water of Shanan Power House has been
harnessed. — UNI, OC
