ACTION DEMANDED: Resentment prevails among residents of Gali Kulfian Wali in the Prem Nagar locality here over increasing activities of drug abusers and gamblers around a primary school. A deputation of the residents met the SHO of the city police station on Tuesday and demanded action against anti-social elements.

ELECTED: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Muktsar circle of the Technical Services Union of the PSEB: president — Mr Hem Raj; vice-president — Mr Krishan Lal Ghayal; secretary — Mr Shankar Dass; joint secretary — Mr Balwinder Singh; and treasure — Mr Sukhdev Singh.

ARRESTED: Daulat Singh alias Dauli of Jalalabad West was arrested here on Monday while smuggling 180 kg of poppy husk from Rajasthan. He has been remanded in police custody till January 23, sources said.

CAMP: As many as 100 patients were examined at a free homoeopathy check-up came in Dharampura village, near here, on Monday. Officials said the camp was held by the government dispensary in Alamgarh village with help of the Naujwan Ekta Club. Dr Harinder Singh, HMO, assured patients that their further treatment would continue at Alamgarh village.

PRIZES DISTRIBUTED: The Milk Producers Society of Amloh block organised a function at Dharamgarh village, 3 km from here on Tuesday, in which the chief guest, Dr Jagmohan Singh, Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, gave away prizes to the 20 milk producers who topped in the milk supply in the area as stated by Mr Maha Singh and Mr Nahar Singh, president and secretary of the society, in a joint press release.

BSP OBJECTION: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders here on Monday said that Dalits were being discriminated against at the behest of the BJP government in Rajasthan in respect of entry into temples.

RS 1 LAKH GRANT: Prof Darbari Lal, Minister of State for Education, Punjab, on Monday gave rupees one lakh out of his discretionary fund to DAV Senior Secondary School to purchase computers. He gave the cheque to principal of the school, Mr J.P. Shoor.

NCC CAMP: The 10-day NCC training camp conducted under camp commandant Lt Col Arun Kaintyalla of First Punjab Girls Battalion NCC at Lopoke concluded here on Monday. As many as 490 NCC cadets from different colleges affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University and schools participated in the camp. Training in drill, firing, medical, signal, weapon motivation, PT culture and personality development was imparted to girls.

health quiz
: Students of GMT Senior Secondary School participated in a health and hygiene quiz here on Tuesday. Four teams were selected from Classes V to VII and each team was represented by three students. The quiz had four rounds with questions based on food habits, human body structure and other aspects of nutrition. The first prize winners of the contest was the team named ''Protein'' represented by Ashima of Class VII, Prabhjot of Class V and Gaurav of Class VI. The second prize was given to the team ''Carbohydrates'' with Manpreet Kaur of Class VI, Jaipreet of Class V and Dilpreet of Class VII. The winners of third prize were Harpreet Singh of Class VI, Jeevesh of Class V and Harpreet Kaur of Class VII. Rishab, Kawalpreet and Dilpreet won the fourth prize. Mr Aditya Raj Kalia from Cremica Agro Foods was the quiz master. The prizes were distributed by Mr S.K.S. Thind and Mr S.J.S. Thind, both directors of the school.

woollenS distributed: The Rotary Club Ludhiana North distributed 100 sweaters and 45 woollen shawls among the needy students of Government High School, Bassian Bet. The school is situated along the Sidhwan canal, about 25 km from here. The club has also constructed brick-paved paths in the school. Twenty desks, 100 pairs of shoes and 35 trousers will be given to the students on January 22. President SPS Dua and secretary R.S. Behal were present on the occasion.

HELD FOR RAPE: The police here on Monday arrested Gurcharan Singh of the Mamoon area on the charge of raping an 11-year-old girl.

PWD WORKERS: Activists of the PWD Field and Workshop Workers Union (Punjab) will held rallies from January 28 to February 20 in 40 cities of Punjab for the implementation of the high court orders on equal work equal pay for regularisation of the services of the temporary employees etc.

Competition
: Students of S D College, Ambala cantonment, have won the rolling trophy in an inter-university poetry recitation competition. The winning team comprised Harvinder Singh and Gaurav Sharma. Consolation prizes were given to Anuradha in poetry recitation and Sumita Malhotra in essay competition. About 20 teams from the north participated.

Road repair: A road which was re-laid a few weeks ago is already in need of repairs. The road from Mall Road to the main bus stand along Lal Kurti was re-laid, however, its top layer is coming off in patches. Residents said the authorities concerned should inspect the road and take action. 

Urged: Members of the Ambala Cantonment Traders Federation on Tueday said a railway reservation office should be established in Ambala Sadar. A railway parcel booking office should be restarted in Ambala cantonment, Mr N.C. Jain, chairman of the federation, said.

INLD wing: The students' wing of the INLD has been formed. The state secretary of the party, Mr Balwinder Punia, said in SA Jain College (Ambala City), Devendra Rana would be the president of the wing while Harinder Sandhu would be the vice-president and Bhupender Chauhan and Kuldeep Chaudhary general secretaries. Amit Saini would be the secretary and Mukesh Kumar the treasurer. In DAV College, Uday Rana would be the president, Virendra Singh vice-president, Manoj Kumar general secretary, Rahul secretary and Bhupender Singh treasurer. In Government College, Naraingarh, Hoshiar Singh would be the president, Sureksh Kumar Kalra vice- president, Rosi Piplani general secretary, Jarnail Singh secretary and Jagdeep Mittal treasurer. In MPN College, Mullana, Deepak Chauhan would be the president, Dharmendra vice-president, Mukesh Kumar general secretary, Satish Kumar secretary and Ravinder Rana treasurer.
