Dhindsa, Grewal re-elected

Ludhiana, January 20
Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, and Mr J.S. Grewal have been re-elected president and secretary general, respectively, of the Cycling Federation of India (CFI). They were elected for a term of four years at the meeting of the CFI held here last evening. Representatives of all the affiliated units of the CFI attended the meeting. The meeting also resolved to authorise Mr Dhindsa to nominate the members of the executive. Raja K.S. Sidhu, general secretary, Punjab Olympic Association, attended the meeting as an observer of the Indian Olympics Association.

The other office-bearers elected were: vice presidents — Mr Ram Dev Sharma of Rajasthan, Mr P. Suresh of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Bani Ghosh of West Bengal and Mr M Sridhar Gore of Karnataka; associate vice-presidents — Mr Umesh Kumar of Assam, Mr Charanjit Singh of Punjab, Mr K. Krishna of Andhra Pradesh and Mr Partap S. Yadav of Maharashtra; additional general secretary — Mr Balwinder Singh of Punjab; joint secretaries — Mr P.K. Gupta of Uttar Pradesh, Mr D. Lawrence and Mr A. Sharat Chandra Singh of Manipur.

Mr Ashwani Kumar of Delhi, ex-officio vice-president, was named chairman, training-cum-coaching committee, while Mr A. Saraf of Delhi was nominated convener of the technical committee.

Meanwhile, the Asian Cycling Body has asked the CFI to conduct the Asian Track Cycling Championship tentatively in November, 2005. The meet will be organised by the Punjab Cycling Association here at the Punjab Agricultural University velodrome, according to Mr Balwinder Singh, Additional General Secretary, CFI.

Sports Club triumph

Ludhiana, January 20
Sports Club and Double Deckor XI scripted victories in their respective matches in the Eighth Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Cricket Tournament being organised by the Shastri Young Society at Daresi Ground here today.

In the first match, Sports Club won the toss and opted to bat first. In the allotted 22 overs, they scored 146 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Nishu top scored with 63 runs followed by Minta who made 27 runs. In reply, Pankaj XI could make 129 runs.

In the second match, Double Deckor XI srored an impressive 91-run win over Jalota XI. In reply to Double Deckor XI’s 149, Jalota XI were shot out for just 58 runs.
