3 city girls to attend R-Day camp

Three students of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, have been selected for participation in a Republic Day camp being organised in New Delhi. The girls have been selected after a rigorous training process in a series of camps that have earlier been organised at Doraha, Jalandhar, Chandigarh and Gurgaon.

Cadet Vibhuti Jain, a Class IX student, was recently adjudged the best cadet in the junior division category among the girl cadets of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. She will now be representing the joint directorate of the region in the best cadet competition to be held at the national level during the camp where the best cadets of all the 16 directorates of India will be participating. The cadets have been given extensive training in shooting, drill and general awareness, apart from developing leadership qualities.

The other two cadets, Jasmine and Aastha of Class IX, have been selected for the camp and will be participating in the drill competition and in the national integration awareness presentation at the national level.

It is for the first time that three cadets of the same institute have been selected for the prestigious Republic Day camp. The Commanding Officer of Unit 3, Punjab Girls Batallion, NCC, Lt-Col Avtar Singh, said that this had been possible because of the determination on the part of the cadets.

NSS camp concludes

A 10-day NSS special camp by the constituent colleges of Punjab Agricultural University, was organised at Leel and Nangal Kalan villages, in Ludhiana district. The camp concluded yesterday. During the camp the volunteers undertook several community development activities, like cleanliness of homes, public buildings, lanes and drains with active involvement of the villagers.

Volunteers taught young schools boys and girls the planting and maintenance techniques of flower plants and motivated them to study hard and join various courses in PAU.

Women volunteers gave demonstrations to girl students and village women on interior decoration, flower arrangement, preservation of food-stuffs and preparation of jams, chutneys, sauces and pickles. Expert lecturers on balanced diet to pregnant women and lactating mothers, mushroom cultivation and bee-keeping were delivered by Ravinder Kaur, Dr Shammi Kapur and Dr P.K. Chhuneja, respectively from PAU, Ludhiana. Volunteers took out impressive rallies in both the villages carrying banners and placards, pasting hand bills on the walls and shouting slogans against the use of drugs and alcohol.

The chief guest, Dr S.S. Sokhi, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU, presented mementoes to the Best Campers.
