Waiting endlessly for X-ray registration
Pratibha Chauhan
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 20
Patients wanting to get an X-ray done at PGI’s Oral Health Sciences Department have to face lot of inconvenience. While only half an hour has been kept for getting the registrations done, patients are generally asked to come the next morning even if they make it on time as the registration staff have their tea break during this brief period.

Patients coming for treatment for their dental problems to the department have to inconvenience as there is only half an hour’s time for getting the X-ray registration done and even during this brief period the staff, at times, is not present on duty, as they are busy sipping tea.

“First the time for getting the registration done for an X-ray is just half an hour (11 to 11.30 a.m) and on top of that the person in charge has very conveniently kept his tea break from 11.15 to 11.45 a.m, virtually making a mockery of the whole system,” remarked an agitated patient from Panchkula, who had to go back home without getting the X-ray done, yesterday.

Interestingly, the timing of the tea break from 11.15 to 11.45 a.m has been written on the notice board, where patients get the entry in the register, before they can get the X-ray done. The patients said it was amazing how doctors in the Dental Department had not taken note of such irresponsible behaviour by the staff on duty.

There were almost 10 patients, who could not get their X-ray done yesterday.

“This has been a persistent problem as there are times when the staff at the registration counter proceeds on a tea break much earlier, leaving the patients in the lurch,” admitted an employee of the department.

The Department of Oral Health Sciences at the PGI might boast of offering the best services by a team of dedicated doctors and staff but such instances of callousness, where patients are put to inconvenience should be taken care of, rued the patients.

The patients said they would have to waste another day as they have to come back for getting the X-ray done as doctors at the PGI preferred that the X-ray was done from their machinery.

The Head of the Oral Health Sciences Department, Prof H.S. Chawla, did not respond to the written queries given through the public relations committee.

When contacted on telephone, he refused to discuss the issue. When asked if there was staff or equipment shortage, he again refused to comment.

School aims at promoting sports culture
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, January 20
Ananda International School, at Togan village is just 2 km from Sector 39, which has technical collaboration with Shri Ram Educare, Delhi, will experiment with innovative means to emphasis developing sport culture among children. “The school, which is being set up in an area of 11 acres, will be devoting nearly seven acres for developing sports infrastructure,” said Mr JS Sukhija, promoter of the school. Mr Sukhija, himself a keen golfer, said in the coming session they would be starting classes from nursery to VI and in a phased manner the school would be upgraded to Class XII.

Ms Komal Anand, Principal of the school, said they would be following the modified sports concept as being practiced by the Australian Sport Commission. She said, according to this system, a child up to the age of eight need not play with normal sports equipment and children were given top quality cricket balls and bat. Similarly the area of the playing field would also be reduced so that tiny tots did not have to exert much. Till the age of eight a child would be encouraged to play all games. However, after this age, considering the interest and aptitude of a child in a particular sport the child would be coached in some sports, said Ms Anand, who had been working with this system for the past two years.

She said unlike few other schools they had the benefit of more area available for creating the sports infrastructure.

Ms Anand said they would be starting a cricket academy to be run under the patronage of Dronacharya Desh Prem Azad and former test star Chetan Sharma. Two tennis courts, a basketball court, grounds for football and hockey, a track for athletics and an indoor hall for badminton and other indoor games would be ready in another two or three months, she added.

The Principal said the school was just 3 km from Sector’s 38 and 39 and was in proximity to various Mohali areas. The school buses would be available for all sectors of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali and would pick up children for sports activities. Ms Anand said after the school hours the sports facilities would also be made available to students of other schools.
